Rec gym entry policy changed

The recreational gym’s new policy includes a limitation on the number of guests Eastern students can bring to the gym.

To prevent the rec gym from becoming something of a local community center, at first the policy was changed to permit only Eastern students and their guests, security director John Sheehan said.

While the rec gym used to be open to students around the clock, security started to lock it from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. every night.

After problems with some students inviting as many as a dozen guests or more, the policy was revised again. Since March 17, students are limited to only two guests per student.

“I suspect the problem was being caused by very few students,” Sheehan said, “but it was denying the use of the gym to the rest of the Eastern community.”

Because of times when a single student would bring multiple guests for a game of full-court basketball, other students were unable to use the gym.

The full policy is detailed in the March 22 “At Eastern.”
