A development site near the eastern bank of the Schuylkill River was purchased from PMC Property Group, which plans to build two towers of mostly glass and metal. The company has seen an increase in demand for apartment living and will capitalize on this demand by opening up the “River Walk” in Center City Philadelphia.

River Walk was originally under other management to construct the Schuylkill project at 23rd and Arch Streets. But PMC, who is known to be Philadelphia’s largest landlord, proposed that the towers of 32 and 28 stories be built by New York architect Anthony Kim. The buildings will be spacious enough to also include retail stores and a supermarket. The project site is not too far away from Carl Dranoff’s One Riverside Condominiums.

These towers will stand right across the river from University City, which has its own project proposals in the works, such as the Schuylkill Yards and uCity Square. Regarding the Schuylkill Yards project, President John Fry of Drexel University envisions to transform parking lots and industrial buildings between the campus and 30th Street Station. The uCity Square project would affect the Science Center campus in University City, which plans to adapt this new name to give the center a more “urban vibe.” Philadelphia Inquirer staff writer Jacob Adelman writes, “Though the science center itself will continue as a business incubator and research hub under its current name, the campus on which it operates is being rebranded as part of its $1 billion expansion.”

PMC is contacting a supermarket for the River Walk project that will agree to occupy 60,000 square feet on the second floor, including levels of parking for customers and residents on the first and third floors.

Some concerns regarding the River Walk project for PMC include  the decrease in “multifamily rental demand” due to other new development which will be on the market within the next several years. According to the Washington-based real estate tracker Delta Associates, “Average rents for Class A high-rise apartments decreased 1 percent in the year ended Sept. 30, compared with a 3.6 percent rise during the year-ago period.” Despite the decrease in rent, Executive Vice President Jonathan Stavin is confident the project will be a success due to the increasing job opportunities and growing population of Center City residents.

Cross Country

by Hector Davila

It’s that time of year again: the fall season, when there are colorful leaves, pumpkin spice and we definitely cannot forget the MAC Championships. The end of October into November is an exciting time of year for all colleges around the country. Fall sports fight to obtain playoff spots and score a date with destiny at the MAC Championships, otherwise known as MAC Week.

Last Saturday, Oct. 29, the Cross Country team took off to race for MAC, hosted this year by Messiah College. The race consisted of a hilly 6K course that pushed runners to the limit in speed and endurance. Women’s Cross Country finished in sixth place, while Men’s Cross Country finished in seventh place overall.

The Championship performance is a positive step forward to the team’s full potential. The coaches expect great improvement to come from the team, especially after releasing six seniors who graduated last season. Head Coach Mike Wilson says, “This isn’t necessarily the result that we were hoping for; we’re better than the results show. We are young, and we’ve dealt with a lot of adversity this year. All that said, we laid a great foundation today. Our entire varsity is a pack of freshmen and sophomores, and we have some high goals for this group. We are just getting started.”

At MAC, Eastern Men’s and Women’s Cross Country had a few breakout athletes who received 1st and 2nd-Team All-MAC Regional recognition. First-year Megan Bernotas led the women, coming in sixth place overall, becoming the first Eastern first-year student to finish sixth since joining MAC in 2008. Sophomore Kierra Zack finished in ninth place, receiving All-MAC 1st-Team recognition, along with Bernotas. From the Men’s squad, Bryton Henry, who finished 11th, and Greg Thomas, who finished 17th, both secured spots on the All-MAC 2nd-Team.

Men’s Soccer

by Shelly Lister

Finishing the regular season with a record of 14-3-1, the EU Men’s Soccer team entered postseason play with a four-game winning streak. On Tuesday, Nov. 1, the Eagles hosted the MAC Freedom Semi-Finals against King’s College. The match ended with a score of 0-0 and was sent to penalty kicks after 110 minutes of play. The Eagles won the shoot-out 4-1 with two big saves by junior goalkeeper Quentin Keibler to boost the Eagles. Jadon Ramsing, Cade Harmon, Jake Sankey and Colin Furlong each put away their penalty shots to secure the win for the Eagles and advance to the MAC Freedom Finals.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Eagles traveled to Dallas, Pa. to match up against Misericordia University. Misericordia scored early in the match and maintained the lead for the majority of play. In the 89th minute, first-year Sankey scored with an assist from sophomore Jacob Meyers to keep the Eagles in the match. Once again, the Eagles would have penalty kicks decide their fate. All five Eagles to line up for penalty kicks put away their shots. Keibler made another stop penalty kick and was named MVP for the match. Eastern took home the MAC Freedom Championship and prolonged their playoff run.

On Saturday, Nov. 12 the Eagles traveled up north to play the University of Rochester in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. In the 25th minute of the game, first-year defender Kaleb O’Neil scored his first goal of his collegiate career to put the Eagles up 1-0. Near the end of the match, sophomore Harmon netted another goal to secure the win for the Eagles. Keibler made only three saves the entire match and earned his eighth shut-out for the Eagles this season. This victory marked the first time the EU Men’s Soccer earned an NCAA tournament win.

They moved on to the Finals on Saturday, Nov. 5, where they claimed their ninth MAC Freedom Championship against DeSales University at home, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18).

Women’s Volleyball is now in the NCAA Tournament, where they have continued their winning streak. They headed to Hoboken, N.J. for the Regional Playoffs, where they first played Farmingdale State College on Friday, Nov. 11, winning with a score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 26-24).       On Saturday, Nov. 12, Eastern University celebrated the second-annual Multicultural Festival hosted by the Hosea 4:6 Initiative, “Around the World in One Night,” in an effort to spread diversity awareness. The president of the initiative, David Quinones, asked several students and friends who were willing to represent their cultures at the Festival.

Each cultural group had their own table to share food, pictures and items that describe the group’s native homeland. Places like Puerto Rico, China, Costa Rica and Ukraine were represented at the Festival. The event, which was held in the Dining Commons on the St. Davids campus, welcomed everyone to a mini-world tour, where people shared stories through cultural dances, songs and folktales.

The Festival hosted students who were interested in learning about the diversity at Eastern. Everyone conversed and made new friends as we shared our particular cultures. People even began to learn one another’s cultural dances, and the whole venue was transformed. After each individual performance the crowd erupted with applause, the joy only growing as the night progressed. It was a humbling experience connecting with friends new and old to discover more about them.

I got to host the Puerto Rico table along with a few friends, and as I served the homemade Spanish dishes and looked around, I couldn’t help but admire the multiple cultures that could be found together in one room. Many people I didn’t know who were from different countries got to share their patriotism with the Eastern community. As many people came to give their compliments on the food, this helped me appreciate my ethnicity and culture more. Often, it is so easy to take your own uniqueness for granted until someone else acknowledges it. There couldn’t be a better time to celebrate the importance of diversity than now, as we draw near to the Thanksgiving holiday, when we all can remember to express gratitude for our neighbor’s cultural differences. The Festival was a success in bringing people together in spite of race or language barriers that many times separate us from engaging with one another.

Have you ever asked yourself what good comes from grieving? Or perhaps you’ve wondered why our hearts may need a little sorrow once in a while. Honestly, these are minor subjects we tend not to meditate upon since we have so many other distractions. Would you believe me if I told you that grief could be for your good? Before I inform you about the benefits, let’s start off by simply exploring what grief is.

Grief is when one experiences deep sorrow as a response to loss or trouble. It is known to have physical, cognitive, behavioral, social and philosophical effects. Everyone has their own ways of coping with deep sorrow; these may include shutting themselves off from loved ones or acting as if nothing happened at all. Many  people bottle up their emotions until they are overwhelmed. They struggle to find comfort in their lives in such a dark hour. You may yell for help only to have no one near, or try to hold yourself together as someone else’s strength even though on the inside you are falling apart. Grief is not easy to endure; it is the ultimate process that can either make you or break you.

It is human to grieve, but no one wants to grieve intentionally, especially since loss is never easy. However, in order to have deep sorrow, one must first have a strong bond or attachment to someone or something. Although anyone would rather experience joy than grief, there is something amazing discovered between the two states. There is beauty in brokenness that one can find if they channel grief positively. As Charlie Brown says, it can become “good grief!” Pain is not pointless or without benefit. If you are someone who grieves for your losses as well as the losses of others, that creates within you something beautiful that we all need in order to truly live: compassion. Grief is the sign that we are still alive and that we are still human. For how beautiful is the human reality that we break for the brokenness of this world?

“Good grief” is necessary to survive in life for it forms in us a deep hope. Humanity without grief would turn us into beings with hearts of stone. It is completely natural, when we are afflicted or troubled, to begin to cry and mourn in order to be relieved of our pain. Positive grief can be good for every individual, as it helps to build strong and mature character, compassion for others besides yourself and, ultimately, hope. Grief allows you to see the world through another’s eyes and join them in their darkest hour. When someone’s hope is finally lost, you can be a spark of light that reignites a blaze of faith within them.

One of the most difficult things to do is help relieve someone of their own misery. There is an old saying that “misery likes company,” so bringing joy to the grieved is like declaring war against grief. The problem with channeling grief in a negative manner is that we start to become a prisoner of the mind. If you are up for the challenge of helping out those who do not know how to channel grief positively, here are a few tips:

First, do not allow negativity to influence your own peace and joy.

Second, discover the root of the person’s grief to know how to properly aid their emotional need (do not assume anything).

Finally, help the person search for constructive, healthy habits to relieve their pain, especially when they’re alone, and offer your faith in Christ as you walk with them.

The city of Harrisburg recently took a step forward in an effort to provide a better future for its citizens. In an agreement between Harrisburg and Eastern University made earlier this year, full-time city employees and their dependents are ensured a tuition discount of 25 percent. Eastern’s support is a part of Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse’s Live and Learn Partnership, which plans to create more opportunities for adults to pursue their professional and post-secondary goals. City employees will have the choice between online classes or classes at Eastern’s Harrisburg campus. The partnership includes undergraduate and graduate programs for city employees who may have lost the opportunity for higher education or simply laid their dreams of higher education aside.

On May 10, in the atrium of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. City Government Center in Harrisburg, Eastern University and the Mayor’s Office officially signed the partnership. Regarding the partnership, Mayor Papenfuse says, “I am most appreciative of Eastern University’s partnership to support our city. We thank Eastern University for reaching out to offer valuable educational opportunities for our employees. We encourage others to follow Eastern University’s lead and join hands with the city to ensure the success of the city’s recovery.”

“Eastern University is the first participating institution in the mayor’s tuition discount program in the city of Harrisburg,” Mumia Parham, Executive Director of Strategic Alliances and Partnerships, says. “This is an exciting opportunity for both the university and the city to advance shared goals and achieve great outcomes. I am enthusiastic about the prospects of this tuition partnership, and I am eager to aid and support incoming adult students’ return back to school as they pursue their degree at Eastern.”

For nearly 20 years, Eastern has offered bachelor and master degrees at their Harrisburg campus. This agreement to expand educational opportunities by partnering with the city displays Eastern’s commitment to older students, as well as its commitment to providing affordable education.

Major League Baseball has been very busy this off-season, with multiple moves and big trades. Teams are off to the races competing against time and one another to build up their version of an elite team. Despite the busy off-season market, about six teams in the National League are in a state of rebuilding and acquiring young prospects to advance their franchise years ahead. Less competition in these games means a decrease in fans’ participation, and therefore a loss of money for the 2016 season. There are eight or nine teams most likely to be battling for playoff spots, such as the Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, and Cardinals. The six teams expecting another losing record in 2016 are the Phillies, Reds, Brewers, Braves, Rockies, and Padres, all coming from the National League. If these six teams all end with losing records it will be the first time in baseball history that all losing teams came from one league instead of both.

Many analyses are predicting what the outcome of this year’s baseball season will be. Others are preparing themselves for an uneasy, nerve-wracking, and frustrating pennant races. There is little optimism that any of these teams can rise up with strong potential. The following player names listed are the most recent trades made this off-season. The hot stove has been cooking some tasty surprises for 2016:

Chicago White Sox acquired 3B Todd Frazier from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and 3B Brett Lawrie from the Oakland Athletics.

Philadelphia Phillies acquired P Charlie Morton from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Houston Astros acquired P Ken Giles and SS Jonathan from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Los Angeles Angels acquired INF Yunel Escobar plus cash from the Washington Nationals, and SS Andrelton Simmons, C Jose Briceno from the Atlanta Braves.

New York Mets acquired 2B Neil Walker from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Detroit Tigers acquired P Justin Wilson from the New York Yankees, OF Cameron Maybin from the Atlanta Braves, and P Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Seattle Mariners acquired 1B Adam Lind from the Milwaukee Brewers, OF Leonys Martin, P Anthony Bass from the Texas Rangers, and P Joaquin Benoit from the  San Diego Padres.

Arizona Diamondbacks acquired P Shelby Miller and P Gabe Speier from the Atlanta Braves.

New York Yankees acquired INF Starlin Castro from the Chicago Cubs, and P Aroldis Chapman from the Reds.

Washington Nationals acquired CF Ben Revere for RHP Drew Storen plus cash to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Detroit Tigers signed free agent OF Justin Upton to a six-year, $132.75 million deal from the San Diego Padres.

Things to be looking out for this 2016 season: two major deals, acquiring Aroldis Chapman to the Yankees bullpen, and Justin Upton’s bat power to the Tigers. One standout of the 2015 season we cannot undermine is the development and growth of the Chicago Cubs, a team that has gone constantly through rebuild mode and endured  turmoil to reach the point of success they’re at now. The Cubs consists of many young and experienced veterans with incredible talent. I predict the Cubs to be the NL 2016 version of the Houston Astros, for they share the common narrative of improvement from worst to first.

The economy has skyrocketed with a new product demand for hoverboards. This past Christmas break, these motorized “scooters” have shown up in ads, social media feeds, and news broadcasts, and they have become a popular consumer product for all ages. Prices vary with manufacturer, but the hoverboards usually range from $400 to $1,500.

Recently, hoverboards have caused debate due to safety hazards. Reports have cropped up around the counry that boards are catching on fire while in use or while charging. It is now generally believed that the boards may be dangerous, and for liability reasons, stores are afraid to sell them.

Dr. Bettie Ann Brigham recently sent an email to all Eastern students announing a ban on these motorized boards. Some students wonder whether Eastern was reacting to a problem with hoverboards on campus or attempting to prevent one. According to Bettie Ann, “In a community living/learning situation like Eastern University it is important for safety to be a priority. Of course we cannot keep everyone safe at all times, but when we are aware of a danger, we work to protect our community. Hoverboards are a known danger to individuals and communities.” So it seems that the ban is a preemptive move.

Eastern is not the first institution to ban hoverboards or strictly regulate them. On Jan. 1, “The New York Times” reported that the state of California passed a new law to regulate these motorized boards. The law states that riders must be at least 15 years old, riders must wear protective gear, and boards can only be ridden on bikeways; they must be kept off of sidewalks.

Coincidentally, these new hoverboards resemble a product that was trending in 2006: Heelys roller skate sneakers. A similar controversy sprung up around the regulation of Heelys. Just as the hoverboards are being banned in some states and schools, so were Heelys illegal to ride in malls, shops, supermarkets, and schools.

Eastern and other schools, such as the University of California at Los Angeles, are taking precautionary steps towards the safety of their students.
