As the change in seasons rings in a new semester, Eastern welcomes newcomers in every area of campus. New students and faculty alike are spending this semester settling into their places, adjusting to everyday life on campus and bringing their own new ideas and visions to the school.
The music department welcomed a new faculty member this semester: Professor Hye “Hazel” Choi, in place of retired vocal teacher Professor Christine DeVault. Considering DeVault’s length of service and popularity in the Eastern community, she left behind big shoes to fill, but Choi has what it takes to fill them.
Choi was born and raised in Busan, South Korea. She stated in an interview that she spent much of her young life on the beach in her hometown, which created fond memories of her childhood. She claims her love for her work stems from her parents, who are deeply passionate about music. Her home was filled with worship and music throughout the entirety of her youth, so much so that she was inspired to pursue a lifelong career in the arts.
Choi earned her bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University in South Korea and her master’s degree from the University of Iowa.
Professor Choi’s teaching is expected by students to be a new and influential addition to their music education. Thus far, she shared that she is “absolutely loving” her time at Eastern and that her peers have been warm and welcoming toward her.
Choi’s musical career is based heavily on conducting and coaching in church settings, including her current place of service, Jubilee Presbyterian Church. In addition, she has taught over one hundred students at Hazel Music Academy. Needless to say, she knows what she is doing in her field and has proven her abilities throughout her career.
In her interview, Choi shared her goals for her time with her new students here at Eastern. “First and foremost, I want my students to feel comfortable with their voice, enjoy the process and build a solid technical foundation. Beyond technique, I hope singing becomes a true joy for them. My ultimate goal is not just to teach vocal skills, but to impart a lifelong friendship with music—something they can always turn to for comfort and expression throughout their lives.”
The genuine leadership and godly care this new professor aims to show her students is a blessing on Eastern’s campus. We welcome you, Professor Choi!
