Jump into action with “Colombiana”

“Colombiana” is lights, cameras and lots of action as Zoe Saldana takes on the role of Cataleya, a young girl from Bogota seeking vengeance.

As a 10-year-old, Cataleya witnesses the death of her parents, and she swears that she will kill the man who is responsible. After moving to America to live with her uncle, she discloses to him her desire to become a killer and properly avenge her parents.

Over 15 years, Cataleya’s uncle trains her to become an assassin, and she stealthily takes the lives of targets determined by her uncle, along with a few of her own

choosing that she uses to get a message across to the man who killed her parents.

Meanwhile, Cataleya attempts to balance a potential love life and her mission of revenge, questioning whether it is possible to be both a lover and a killer. While she desperately wants both, Cataleya knows that letting someone close to her could jeopardize her alternate lifestyle.

Directed by Olivier Megaton, this movie is full of suspense, from the sneaky ways that the main character destroys her prey to her final plot of revenge as the movie draws to a close. This movie will definitely keep viewers on the edge of their seats as Zoe Saldana flips, kicks and fights through precarious situations.

While the movie is somewhat underdeveloped in some instances and is also slightly predictable, it stays true to what it is: an action film.

If one is seeking a story that one can fully follow and engage in, then this is not your movie. However, if you are looking for a smart killer who infiltrates a prison, swims with sharks and ingeniously takes down the bad guys, this movie is for you. Appreciating “Columbiana” for what it is, I would definitely give it a thumbs up.
