Short hair. It seems like a pretty big thing at Eastern right now. At first glance, I’m not a huge fan of the trend because I think that almost all girls look better with long hair. But I realize that the issue is complex and has to do with more than just appearances. Why would a girl want to have short hair? These are some of my best guesses.
1. Short hair is a way of saying, “I don’t care what other people think. I am unique and proud of it.”
2. Short hair will catch people’s attention. “And God knows I need more of that.”
3. All the cool girls have short hair. “I also would enjoy being cool.”
4. “I don’t want to spend a lot of time messing with my hair. If I chop it off, I can be lazy and fashionable at the same time!”
5. “I’m way too attractive. I need to level the playing field somehow.”
Ok, a guy trying to figure out what goes on inside a girl’s head is probably an effort doomed to failure, but here’s my point: I assume that a girl who gets her hair cut is not doing it to impress guys. And that’s cool. Cutting hair seems like a neat way to break out of traditional beauty standards and express oneself.
Ultimately, I don’t think that it really matters what guys think of girls with short hair because the girls don’t care anyway, right? At the same time, I know that some guys think that girls with short hair are super cute. But it’s definitely a niche market. As for this one male representative, I respect the short hair choice. I think that plenty of people can pull it off. Rarely do I think that it’s an improvement, however. I guess that my opinion on short hair comes down to the motive. I try to give the benefit of the doubt.
