Football:
Eastern Football took on Lebanon Valley College at home on Sept. 19. Eastern shutout the Dutchmen with a final score of 32-0. The offense was all about senior running back Jeremiah Avrilien and the rushing game for the eagles. Avrilien ran for 124 yards and three touchdowns on the day to fuel the victory. Graduate quarterback Brett Nabb added 51 yards on the ground, and another 102 through the air. Junior running back Eric Smith also added 34 yards and a touchdown. Senior defensive back Samuel Scell, sophomore linebacker DonJuan Clark III and senior linebacker Saadiq Simpkins led the eagles in tackles, with nine, nine and six respectively. Senior linebacker Chris Forte added an interception enroute to blanking LVC’s offense.
Eastern Football is back in action on the road on Sept. 26, traveling to Delaware Valley for a very important conference matchup. Kickoff is at noon.
Women’s soccer:
Eastern Women’s Soccer lost 0-2 at Misericordia on Sept. 16. Multiple eagles recorded shots on goal, but none were able to fall for Eastern in this game. Senior goalkeeper Faith Leake recorded six saves in 90 minutes, but her efforts were not enough to secure the draw or the win.
Later in the week they also took on Rutgers-Newark, settling for a 0-0 draw. In a similar story, the eagles were able to create a few chances, but none fell. Faith Leake made eight saves and recorded her third shutout of the year in 90 minutes of play.
Eastern Women’s Soccer will resume play midweek next week, taking on Penn State Harrisburg on the road. The match starts at 7p.m.
Men’s soccer:
Eastern Men’s Soccer suffered a 0-2 loss at Ursinus College on Sept. 15. Junior goalkeeper Michael Arcuri made five saves in 90 minutes, but it was not enough to secure a draw. Eastern created plenty of chances throughout the match, but none were able to fall.
Later in the week, they took on DeSales on the road, picking up a 3-1 win off the backs of three different Eagles scoring goals. Senior forward Marcus Pringle, senior midfielder Osmond Chan and senior forward Zach Sievert all notched scores for the Eagles in the effort. Sievert was also credited with an assist on the day. Michael Arcuri made five saves to limit the damage to one, and the solid defensive effort was enough to help the Eagles pick up the win.
Eastern Men’s Soccer is back in action on Sept. 23 when they will play Goucher College at home. The match starts at 3:30p.m.
Cross country:
Eastern men’s and women’s cross country both competed at the MAC Championship Preview Meet hosted by Stevenson University on Sept. 18. Both the men’s and women’s teams placed third. On the women’s side, sophomore Ashley Bitler placed fifth overall and was followed by personal bests from junior Tierra Hill and sophomore Helena Stoffel. On the men’s side, the team had multiple runners in the top 30, headlined by senior Robert Walton, sophomore Joshua Knox-Wagner and junior Matthew Schilling.
Eastern men’s and women’s cross country will be back in action on Oct. 2, when they will travel to Lehigh University to compete at the Paul Short Run.
Field hockey:
Eastern Field Hockey had a two-game road stretch this week. On Sept. 16, they took on Drew University, ultimately winning 4-1. Four different Eagles notched scores in the effort, including junior forward CJ Summa, junior defender/midfielder Julia Potter, senior forward Karlee Howard and graduate Midfielder Brynne Miller. Junior goalie Angelina Catania recorded seven saves to limit the damage to one and help the Eagles record their fifth straight win and remain undefeated.
In the latter match of the week, field hockey traveled to Arcadia, staying undefeated with a 2-1 victory. Summa and Miller recorded scores in the effort, and Catania made eight saves, with only one score getting by, to help the Eagles improve to 6-0.
Eastern Field Hockey is back in action on Sept. 22, when they travel to play Wilkes University, which starts at 7p.m.
Women’s volleyball:
Eastern Women’s Volleyball opened conference play with a strong, three set sweep of York College, on Sept. 15. Sophomore Right Side Josie Arezina led the way in terms of kills, recording eight on the day. Three Eagles trailed closely with five each. First-Year setter Alyssa Heffner notched 19 assists on the day, and senior Defensive Specialist Grace Cooper contributed 14 digs in the effort.
Women’s Volleyball finished off the week with a 0-3 loss at Haverford on Sept. 18. Eastern was swept in three close and competitive sets. Seniors Alexis Standford and Jessie Schrieber led the scoring for the eagles with five kills apiece. The Setters combined for 23 assists, as Sophomore Sarah Furey notched 12 and First-Year Alyssa Heffner added 11.
Eastern Women’s Volleyball will be back in action when they travel to Washington D.C. for three matches from Sept. 25-26, taking on Mount Union, Arcadia and Gallaudet.
Golf:
Men’s and women’s golf opened their seasons at two different events. Men’s Golf opened at the Berkleigh Challenge hosted by Albright College, on Sept. 12. The men’s squad placed twelfth overall out of 14 teams. Senior Dominic Villamor led the Eagles in scoring with 82 strokes each on both days for a total of 164. First-Year Blake Catalano wasn’t far behind, earning a 166-stroke effort with an 83 on each day.
Women’s Golf opened at the Millersville Fall Classic, on Sept. 14, placing ninth overall. Junior Jeannie Shore ended the second round with the best individual effort of the event, with a score of 93.
Women’s Golf will compete next at the Stevenson Fall Invitational on Sept. 28, before both the men’s and women’s teams compete at the Bulle Rock Invitational hosted by Alvernia from Oct. 5-6.
Tennis:
Men’s Tennis opened its season with a 4-1 win over Immaculata. The Eagles played five matches, including two doubles and three singles. First-year Jared Vitz and sophomore Zachary Sprung won the first doubles match for the Eagles, followed by junior Jared Groff and first-year Gary Gruici picking up the second doubles win of the day. Gruici, Sprung and Vitz all won their singles matches as well.
Women’s Tennis also opened its season the same day, recording a 4-3 win over Immaculata as well. The Eagles won a doubles match, and three singles matches to seal the deal. Senior Kiley McHugh and junior Anaya Birch won the doubles contest, and senior Mary Brusstar, Anaya Birch, and first-year Delaney Stryd all clinched singles victories.
Both men’s and women’s tennis return to action on Sept. 26 at home when they will both take on Penn State Abington.
