Eastern looking into VFMA property

An article in Main Line Suburban Life on March 30, 2010 reported that Eastern and Valley Forge Military Academy were discussing a land sale.

According to President Dr. David Black, Eastern has “long been interested in acquiring houses for possible faculty housing” in the area.

One of the initial plans for the property was that they would serve as long-term living accommodations for Eastern faculty members and their families.

Another idea that Dr. Black mentioned was the possibility of building a performing arts facility or a new science building, which have not been possible until now because of the wetlands on campus.

An earlier suggestion was to convert the houses into student apartments. This idea was discarded when it was discovered that Radnor zoning laws prohibit more than two unrelated students living within a 1,000-foot radius, and a special license must be acquired by the landlord declaring the building as student housing.

The space is being used instead to house graduate students. Currently called “The Village,” one building of apartments has become homes for Eastern’s graduate students. The resident manager of The Village is Julie Fields, wife of new Athletic Director, Brad Fields.
