Eastern weekly sports column 09/27-10/03

Women’s soccer:

Women’s soccer opened this week on Wednesday, Sept. 30, playing Lebanon Valley College at home. Unfortunately, the Eagles dropped the contest 2-0. First-Year forward Corrine Myers recorded the lone shot on goal for the Eagles. Senior goalkeeper Faith Leake made six saves in 90 minutes.

Later in the week, on Saturday, Oct. 3, women’s soccer took on Haverford on the Road, ultimately losing, 0-1. The Eagles created plenty of chances, but none seemed to fall. Faith Leake made five saves in 90 minutes but was unfortunately not enough to keep the score even.

Women’s soccer will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they host York College at home to open Conference play at 3:30 p.m.

Men’s soccer:

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, men’s soccer hosted Lancaster Bible College at home to open the week, ultimately drawing 1-1. Senior forward Zach Sievert notched the lone score for the Eagles on a penalty kick in the 83 minute, and junior goalkeeper Michael Arcuri made four saves in 90 minutes to keep the score to one.

The following Saturday, Oct. 3, men’s soccer went on the road to take on Penn State Berks, winning 4-0. Senior midfielder Osmond Chan and senior forward Ethan Pfau each recorded a pair of scores in a high-octane offensive performance from the Eagles. As a team, Eastern recorded 40 shots and 28 shots on goal, forcing 23 saves from Berks’ goalkeeper. In goal, Michael Arcuri and sophomore Goalkeeper Will Schade each split the game and helped keep the shutout rolling. Arcuri made three saves while Schade made one.

Men’s soccer returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they open conference play at home versus York College at 3:30 p.m.

Field Hockey:

Field Hockey opened the week on the road at Stockton, on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The Eagles lost, 0-8. Junior forward CJ Summa recorded the Eagles’ lone shot on offense. Junior goalie Angelina Catania made 14 saves in 45 minutes, and senior goalie Christina Unger made two saves in 15 minutes.

Later in the week, on Saturday, Oct. 3, field hockey opened conference play on the road at York College. The Eagles ultimately fell, 1-6. Graduate midfielder Brynne Miller notched the lone score for the Eagles. Angelina Catania made a season-high 17 saves in the effort, but it was not enough to stop a relentless York Attack.

Eastern Field Hockey will return to play on a road trip to Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Women’s volleyball:

Women’s volleyball opened this week’s play with a midweek contest versus Lancaster Bible College on Thursday, Oct. 1. Eastern notched a four-set win, 3-1. senior right-side Jessie Schriber led the Eagles in kills on the day with 11. First-year outside hitter Piper Xeller added nine kills and an ace of her own. Sophomore setter Sarah Furey contributed 19 assists.

Over the weekend, on Saturday, Oct. 3, women’s volleyball traveled back to our nation’s capital for the second time this year for a two-match road trip against Eastern Mennonite University and Marymount University. In the first match against EMU, the Eagles earned a three-set sweep. Sophomore right-side Josie Arezina led the Eagles with ten kills. First-year setter Alyssa Heffner notched 18 assists. Sophomore middle hitter Veronica Faber put up six blocks and added seven kills of her own as well.

In the latter contest of the day, Eastern was swept by Marymount, 0-3. Xeller led the Eagles in kills with eight. Furey added 20 assists, and senior defensive specialist Grace Cooper added 19 digs. 

Eastern Women’s Volleyball will be back in action midweek next week, when they take on Hood College on the road, on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
