Eastern University’s gym expansion

In recent years, Eastern University has made several advancements to improve campus life, from the updated baseball field to the addition of the UCook section in the dining commons. Each of these changes has contributed to enhancing the overall student experience, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to growth and improvement. Now, one of its most significant and highly anticipated projects is officially underway: the expansion of the campus fitness center.

After the campus community said goodbye to the swimming pool in 2024, which I’m sure is well missed as we head into hotter days, the university has shifted its focus toward creating a more expansive and modern fitness environment for students. On Wednesday, April 1, construction officially began on the gym expansion, marking the start of a project that had previously existed only in plans and conversations.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the gym parking lot, where students, faculty, partners and staff gathered to mark the official start of construction. The event opened and closed with performances from Eastern’s marching band and cheerleaders, creating an energetic atmosphere that reflected the significance of the moment. Attendees surrounded the designated construction area as speakers highlighted both the practical goals and broader vision behind the expansion.

University President Matthews spoke about the importance of investing in student life, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to creating spaces that serve the entire campus community. His remarks were followed by Interim Athletic Director Brian Bingaman, who shared his excitement for the project while outlining key aspects of the expansion. Student athlete voices were also featured, with Jason Karch and Maya Merritt speaking about their personal experiences and their anticipation for the improved facilities. The ceremony concluded with university representatives picking up shovels for a symbolic groundbreaking, officially marking the beginning of the construction process.

The expansion represents a new phase in Eastern’s efforts to respond to student needs, particularly as the demand for fitness and training space has continued to grow. With plans for larger workout areas, upgraded equipment and expanded locker rooms, the renovation is designed to better accommodate both the general student body and student-athletes. While the project promises significant improvements in accessibility and functionality, it also follows the permanent removal of the swimming pool. No more walking by and seeing murky water and dead leaves, hooray!

The need for expansion has been evident to many students who regularly use the facility. During peak hours and student-athlete lifts, the gym often becomes crowded, making it difficult to access equipment or find space to work out. The new plans aim to address these concerns by increasing the overall size of the fitness center and creating more room for both recreational and athletic users.

The Waltonian’s very own Jason Karch, a graduating senior and member of Eastern’s track and cross-country team, said the expansion will address long-standing issues with shared athletic facilities. “Being able to have a good amount of locker space” and “not having to share [with teammates or other teams] on game days” are key improvements, he said, noting that teams have often struggled with “not having enough lockers.”

Although Karch is on a path to greater things beyond Eastern, the project is something he is very passionate and excited about for future and current students. Bingaman also expressed enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing how the changes will benefit student-athletes in particular. He pointed to the addition of “a fitness center that is specifically dedicated to athletes,” as well as the ability to avoid overcrowding, noting there will be “no scheduled lifts, so we won’t be fighting the traffic [of other members of the community] anymore.”

Beyond the physical upgrades, Bingaman highlighted the broader vision behind the expansion. “What excites me most isn’t just the building itself, it’s what it’s going to represent,” he said. “We want to create an environment that supports strength conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, recovery, medical performance, and spiritual growth.”

According to the university’s plans, the updated facility will include larger practice areas, expanded locker rooms and a wider range of workout equipment. These additions are intended to better accommodate Eastern’s growing student population while also supporting athletic programs that rely on the space for training.

The conversation surrounding the expansion reflects a larger question about how universities prioritize space and resources. As campuses evolve, decisions often involve balancing specialized amenities with more widely used facilities. At Eastern, the shift toward expanding the gym suggests a focus on maximizing accessibility and usage. Construction is expected to continue over time and students may experience temporary disruptions as different areas of the gym are updated. Although this might become troublesome for some students, just look at it as an opportunity to get more steps in!

As Eastern continues to grow and change, the gym expansion serves as a clear example of how the university is attempting to meet the needs of its community.
