This event gave male feminists on Eastern’s campus the opportunity to express what compelled them to be part of the panel and what drove them to take this stance. The questions consisted of themes regarding feminism and the stereotypes surrounding men being feminists.

One of the speakers, Ian Jennings, recognized and was aware of the lack of equality between men and women. He desires for a change in how women are treated.

“There’s nothing I want more than for them to be considered equal,” Jennings said.

Anthony Barr was not surprised by the level of discrimination his female peers faced in today’s society, but said it is something that is in need of changing.

“That alone devastated me” Anthony said regarding how he is no longer shocked when his friends share stories about discrimination or injustice they’ve experienced.

These men seek to work against the effects of society that has plagued women for years. Dr. Butynskyi expressed the kind of things he sees women go through.

“Most of the immediate women in my life have been in abusive relationships,” Dr. Butynski said. Dr. Huddell also explained his experiences at Bryn Mawr College. During the time, Dr. Huddell was a Teaching Assistant. Bryn Mawr’s undergrad program only consisted of female students, so when Dr.Huddell ever had male graduate students in the classes he was a Teaching Assistant for, he immediately could see and feel the tension that rose with his female students. He saw that there was an expectation for the women in the class to be classified under the male graduate students. Dr. Huddell later reflects this to be applied to the need for more women to be in STEM programs.

Later in the panel, Kay talked about the expectations male athletes are almost required to keep up with in today’s society. However, he tries to combat that stereotype.

“As an athlete, I see derogatory remarks as something that should be noticed,” Kay said. Kay acknowledges the kind of impact his word, and others, has on society and its view of women.

Also, Jennings accepts that, because he is a man and because of the examples society teaches, his voice is heard more than a woman, and his opinion holds more value. Ian instead chooses to use that privilege to shift societies view. He became very aware of his privilege from early on in life, as he grew up around women.

As a Christian, Dr. Huddell is against violence towards women. Because of his faith, he understands that women should be protected rather than harmed. In addition, Kay recognizes the core of our humanity is love.

“You need to show love to everyone” Kay said.

Barr presented an interesting point during the panel.

“The Virgin Mary is profound on many ways,” Barr said. Barr went on to show that in the Catholic tradition, Mary is held in high regard. During confessions, people express their sorrow for their sin and also express their guilt in being the cause of Christ’s suffering. In showing this, they ask Mary for forgiveness for being part of the reason for Jesus’ crucifixion.

In rejecting women in society today Barr shows that by default “you’re rejecting Christ’s mother.”

The summer is a good time to catch up on things we miss during the school year. During the summer I found myself catching up on my favorite TV shows or games. I even find myself starting new hobbies and projects to keep myself productive. There are some summers, though, that we may have to do some not-so-fun things to keep us productive, like for instance, taking summer classes. The prospect may be unsettling I’m sure, but they should really be considered.

The big question here isn’t should I take summer classes, but the question we should be asking is are they even worth it? One summer I decided that in order to keep up with my academics and my major at the time I would have to take a summer class. Extending the semester was not a happy thought to me, but it was something I had to do. Going in I thought class was going to be just as stressful and daunting as it is during the school year. I thought I would be staring at the those worksheets rethinking most of my life choices. I thought I would be so confused with the work and the professor would be hard to get in touch with.

Being on campus I was so used to the convenience of being around all the access we have to the books and our professors that I didn’t want to put myself in the position to be stuck. That was not the case. That summer I was just taking one class, a chemistry class, so it wasn’t a class I wanted to take per say, but it had to be done. I was super surprised when I was keeping up with the curriculum. The first week I was a little bit of a workaholic. I tried to do all my work at once so I can get back to enjoying my summer, but I found that it just stressed me out. So I just went with the flow of things and did the work as it came. I found that it was actually a pretty easy going experience. During the semester I was swamped with other classes and responsibilities. Not to mention the meetings with professors and clubs, but over the summer there is none of that. There is just me, my pajamas and laptop.

The crazy thing about the classes is I was actually learning the content! Now that may not be surprising for some, but it was really a shock for me because I was horrible at chemistry and I honestly didn’t think I was going to get anything out of the summer classes. I was clearly proven wrong. I learned more in my summer classes for chemistry than I did when I was taking the class during the semester. So if someone asked me is summer classes worth it? I would say yes. They are extremely beneficial because they are a more intimate kind of learning. There is time there to do the work and it is all at your pace and the distractions are cut down completely. If it’s possible I’d go for it.

Since the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, it has been a long and hard month coming, but in the recent days there has been some big developments in the gun-violence conversation. In the wake of the shooting in Parkland, Florida, the March For Our Lives was launched to say “enough is enough” with gun-violence and mass school shootings. The march took place Saturday, March 24, in Washington D.C, though there were countless more across the country that took place as well. In this massive march, more than two million Americans attended the event, students and adults alike. It was a direct reflection of the passionate people behind the movement and how serious American Citizens are about reforming gun laws.

This nationwide march was organized by senior Emma González and junior Cameron Kasky who are survivors of the Florida school shooting, along with hundreds of other students across the nation. This helped further their Never Again movement which is a response to the shooting. With the help of supporters and sponsors like Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, and many other celebrities, the students were able to organize the march, but it was so much more than the funds that caused this march to be this powerful.

In an article from The New Yorker, The students got the chance to ask two school psychologists, Gayle Morris and Joanne Zinski, what they believed made this march so different than those in the past. They stated “It’s these Parkland students,” Zinski said. “We are here to support them. It took a group that was willing to push back the grief to action. For some reason, they’ve sparked something—for America, and I know in us.” Morris also agreed with this statement, saying, “Sandy Hook, those parents, that community, they did wonderful things, but they couldn’t get the momentum. Teenagers are so powerful.”

The Parkland students and many others are calling for change in the nation. With this march they hope to cause a change in legislation. In their mission statement, the march organizers write: School safety is not a political issue. There cannot be two sides to doing everything in our power to ensure the lives and futures of children who are at risk of dying when they should be “learning, playing, and growing.” The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues. They seek to put an end to the tragedy and the loss that comes with gun-violence. They strive to make a lasting change in the nation and that affects more than just those few high school students or those who are impacted by gun-violence, but it affects all of us. The outrage and outcry of the people shows that this is an issue that needs to be addressed. The march challenges not only the accessibility of guns, but I dare say our very perception of their presence and how that plays a role in America. Gun violence is something that won’t change unless we are willing to change it, and the students of Marjory are doing just that. They are taking their outrage, their hurt and their emptiness after the loss and filling it with a cry that is being heard across the country and across communities. I have to be honest; there is in fact something different with the energy behind this movement. There is such a force behind this movement that these students just might push through and reach those in power. They just might shift the nation in a new direction forever.

Spring Banquet is a long standing tradition and has been an integral part of the Eastern experience for years. With the stress and strain of the college experience, it is a good kind of relief that students need now and again.

Every school year, the Student Activities Board (SAB) comes together to create new and fun events for the students on campus—such as the ice skating event and coffee house. The Spring Banquet is included in that list. Each year, they come together to work out what it takes to put together the event. Each dance is given a theme that adds a flare to the night.

“The theme is determined based on the location that is chosen for Spring Banquet. For instance, last year when we went to the Penn Museum we decided on an around the world theme because the museum itself has artifacts from around the world. SAB decides collectively on the theme each year, but it typically is chosen with consideration of the Spring Banquet location,” Krista Barnett, a Student Life Programming Coordinator said.

There is not any one person in particular who is in charge of putting together the banquet, but everyone in SAB works together to build a nice night for all students.

“It is the perfect way to take a break from school. Where me and my friends can get together and make new memories. It is also a good excuse to go shopping for a new dress. The food is usually really good and they always have cute places to take pictures. I really enjoy dancing all night and just making it a special day with my friends,” student Kaitlynn Shorb said.

The Spring Banquet is a fantastic event that helps many students relax as finals are starting.

The ambiance is always refreshing and it is a nice escape from the mundane. At Spring Banquet, the students enjoy fellowshipping with one another as they dine on delicious, catered food. As the night goes on, students flood the dance floor and have a good time. With professional photographers ready with a photo booth filled with festive props and hats, it is the perfect recipe for a night full of laughs and memories. This year’s theme is “Once upon a time.” I am excited to hear the stories and memories people have made.

On Feb. 18, Eastern announced that they will be adding a Computer Science degree to the mathematics department. Dr. Walter Huddell states in the article on Eastern’s website that, “what the telescope is to the astronomer, the computer is to the computer scientist. Like the telescope, the computer is a means by which new universes of interesting problems are revealed.”

The curriculum for the Computer Science Program consist of courses such as: Data Structures, Databases, Programming Languages, Operating Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Analysis of Algorithms, and Ethical and Philosophical Issues in Computer and Data Science. There are also mathematical courses that will count toward the major including: Calculus, Discrete Mathematics and Linear Algebra. Students will also be given the opportunity to potentially combine their Computer Science Major with pure mathematics and data science.

Eastern strives for academic excellence as well as an integration of faith and ethical behavior within its studies. Regarding the new major, Dr. Huddell states, “the technical rigor of our program is juxtaposed with a robust University approach to Christian liberal learning. We aim to produce Christian thinkers who can engage the data science world in ways consistent with a Christian understanding of ethics and personhood.”

Eastern is currently admitting students into the program. The first Computer science students will start in Aug. 2018.

On Jan. 4, the Israeli government made the decision to send 37,000 African immigrants out of Israel. Most of these immigrants are from Eritrea and Sudan.

According to the government, these migrants came into the country illegally. The government is calling them “infiltrators.” The government believes that many of the migrants came into the country mainly for work rather than asylum. By Feb. 5, those who did not have a refugee application pending were sent out notices informing them that they had two months to leave the country, and those who would stay would be thrown in jail. There were about 20,000 male African migrants who received these notices from the government.

According to Fox News, the Israeli Government are also offering the migrants $3,500 and a plane ticket to do just that. According to Fox News migrant aid worker Adi Drori-Avraham, “We see here the implementation of the decision,” She adds, “From today when a person goes to request an extension to their visa, if he does not have a pending asylum application… his visa will not be renewed and he will be given a deportation order,” The rule has a exception for women, children, parents of children, and victims of human trafficking, but this is only temporary.

This has been raising a lot concern and even outrage throughout Israel. Many people have taken the side of the migrants considering the countless times Israel has been oppressed. Many believe they should show compassion to the people who came to Israel to seek safety. Many have left their homes and their families while in fear of their lives in order to get to Israel. Many citizens will continue to protest and fight back in hopes of keeping the immigrants in the country.
