The 2018 MLB season seemed to be unpredictable for most Phillies fans as most of the team has underwent rebuilding with the departure of familiar faces, to new faces added all around from the lineup to the managerial positions. One of those new names that began circulating opening week of the baseball season was none other than Gabe Kapler.

The Phillies beginning season woes were a series of unusual situations that most fans or players get to see often. For Opening Day Aaron Nola, the ace for Philadelphia was set to pitch his season debut, but after simply 68 pitches he was lifted from the game by manager Kapler. Now for those who don’t know Gabe Kapler is a rookie manager in the 2018 MLB season. The Phillies will be his first official team to learn from and hopefully guide well into competing. Due to his lack of experience some unfortunate events took place only three games into the season:

1: Hoby Milner called from the bullpen without a warm-up.

2: Using 18 relief pitchers used over a three day span.

3: New incomer Pat Neshek placed on the Disabled List (DL).

The organization was blunt about their expectations and trust in the new manager Kapler. After his shaky first days and few rookie mistakes General Manager Klentak became vocal on his views of every incident. “Never in our wildest dreams did we expect Kap or any first-year manager we would have hired to come in and be perfect from day one,’’ Klentak said. “That’s just not realistic. I wasn’t perfect in my first day on the job as a general manager, either. Kap will learn and grow the same way that the players and I are learning and growing, and we’re all going to develop together.” The Philadelphia fans were their typical selves during their home opener as they booed Kapler when he was announced during opening day ceremonies.

Surely ‘The Process’ is one that involves both the coaching staff and the players. The weight of a team or championship does not fall on one person’s shoulders, but is diversely carried together. Both the Super Bowl LII Champion Eagles and the playoff bound 76ers sure have walked the same footsteps where the Phillies find themselves. The triumphant story continues to unfold and show the City of Philadelphia that new beginnings can be overcome.

Currently the Phillies have a strong record and are in a good spot in the much too early to look at National League East standings. This is an eye-opener to most people this year for such a young team. In their last ten games they are 8-2 against opponents. During their home series the bats lit up game after game scoring runs in the double digits, taking advantage on other teams in rebuild mode. It may be safe to say the season won’t be smooth sailing, but it’s sure one you won’t want to miss.

On Wednesday April 18, Eastern University will host their third Faith on the Field event with guest Super Bowl Champions Jordan Hicks and Zach Ertz. The event will take place in the gym with a number of available seats. Tickets are very limited and must be obtained in order to be admitted for the event, but all tickets are free for anyone who does not want to miss this show.

Faith on the Field has gained much fan appreciation for their latest successes, hosting both Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles players on campus. Last year during the 2017 fall semester, Eastern welcomed Carson Wentz and Trey Burton with a spectacular display on the Olson field, a big stage with good lighting as well as organized seating to hold residents and visitors.

Sal Tortora of the Waltonian personally has been impacted by the show as he is an intern for Faith on the Field Show. When asked about the show Tortora responded by saying “It’s about showing and talking about how yes we love what we and our favorite athletes do on the field, but what is truly most important is our faith in Christ and to spread the word of Christ.” Many other Eastern athletes have been inspired by Faith on the Field’s campus contributions. They continue to create a place to talk about hopes and doubts every believer wrestles with on their journey of faith.

Oh no not again! If you have been paying close attention to the media the last few days, you’ll have noticed the decision to shutdown the government until an agreement is reached. On Monday Jan. 22, 2018 the Democrats voted to reopen the government, and President Trump signed the agreement. But what really caused the shutdown? After many weeks of “tax cuts” and DACA updates, a sudden shutdown cast a shadow over our nation.

Flashback to 2013, there was a government shutdown for similar reasons. Every year Congress petitions budget bills to vote on, preparing for the following/upcoming year to come. During the 2013 budget debates, House speaker and chairman of the House budget committee Paul Ryan proposed to have Congress vote to increase defense funding by $54 billion dollars. This agreement was processed through the Budget Control Act (BCA 2011), which maintains order of government funding both defensive and non-defensive assets. The House Appropriations Committee attempted to manage the numbers orderly, but by late July the process failed, which lead to the October 2013 shutdown over health care.

Apparently lessons were not learned after the failure, as we witness this year Donald Trump reapplying the same concept of budgeting. Trump also proposed this year that Congress spend $54 billion in military operations. The House Republicans believed to have a solid plan. They chose to bypass the President’s recommendations and bump up spending to $72 billion, with $5 billion in lower caps for domestic spending. Their questionable decision led to the defiance of the BCA.

Throughout the three days of closure all of Congress has played the “blame game”. According to Politico, the chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee John McCain (R-Ariz.) stated, “I remind my colleagues that the fiscal year started three weeks ago and that the Defense Department is currently operating under a continuing resolution,” McCain said in Senate debate. “We know the harmful effects it will have on the military. That is why getting to work on a budget deal is so urgent. We must delay no longer. The budget resolution is not meant to provide that broader budget agreement. This budget resolution is simply a means to get us to tax reform.”

Last September President Trump issued a deadline telling Congress to formulate a replace for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, by March 4th. Since the statement was released many relatives and Congressmen have stressed over a resolution. If they do not come to an agreement in time, any undocumented immigrants both young and old will be deported immediately. Democrat supporters were in consensus to having the government shutdown in order to use it as a strong stance for DACA, along with better budgeting plans for 2018, but manyfeel betrayed as Democrats “caved,” agreeing to a reopening only three days later.

Some Democrats are hopeful in Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, address to the floor. McConnell agreed to allowing a “level playing field” in negotiating immigration legislation. He also noted that if an agreement is not reached in time, the Senate would take up the task mid-February.

Apple claims this decision was not to prompt customers to scrap their old iPhone and purchase a newer one, although it’s possible most people have already done so.

A few users have already experimented with their own slowed iPhones for solutions. They interviewed a Tennessee teen, writing “The issue came to light when a 17-year-old from Mt. Juliett, Tyler Barney’s post on the social media website Reddit questioned why he should have to buy a new iPhone to speed it up.” Barney states he believed a newer update would help his iPhone become a lot faster and operational, but he quickly noticed that after downloading Apple’s operating system iOS 10.2.1., his phone had slowed. Barney then decide to turn to the internet for help, and found suggestions for a battery replacement. Immediately after the switch his iPhone worked better than ever.

Now, the ongoing debate seems to be whether Apple purposely sent the update to cause customers to purchase their latest models, or if they knew the Lithium-ion batteries used were always insufficient to sustain iPhones. Regardless of which stance you may take, if you are currently dealing with a slowed iPhone you can purchase a new battery online or in-store for $79. This price is still expensive for just a battery, and it is possible after these lawsuits Apple may be forced to reduce it, but either way it’s better than purchasing a new phone that would cost you nearly twice as much. Another thing to keep an eye on is how this controversy may affect the future of Apple and it’s loyalty with customers.

Current reports are circulating that a portion of Wayne Avenue of Radnor Township will be closing for a stretch of time. Never have I ever imagined myself being a part of a college sport’s team. If you were to tell me about three years ago that I would be, I probably would’ve laughed and wondered what you were thinking. Me? Equipped for sports? What are you seeing that I cannot? But now, I come before you in my junior year at Eastern University, and as a third full-time track participant. I’d like to invite you to explore with me how I made it to this point. Truly, it has not been easy, but it sure is possible.

Sometime during my high school years I had this strong desire to join a track team. I never understood why I would want to willingly test my own capacity, but the idea seemed to be unshakable. I also have learned to live by this personal code: if I say I am going to do something, I must get it done somehow, someway. Over the years I grew persistent to be athletic, the only barrier that stood in my way was that my Charter school in Philly never got around to building a student track team. So as you may have guessed, I entered Eastern as an inexperienced, unrecruited athlete.

Flashback to October 8, 2014. It was my first official time joining an extracurricular student program outside of high school. It was my senior year as I prepared for graduation, and sent multiple application to various universities. After school every Tuesday I attended a martial arts youth class; one reason was so that I could stay active besides church events, and two, because I wanted to try something new. At first I was denied to join the Taekwondo program since it only accepted ages 7-14, and of course I was already an 18 year old guy. The sensei instructing the course knew me quite well, mainly by name and good report from others. He quickly came to my aid, advocating for me to train under his guidance, as long as I’d become his teaching assistant.

Month after month during intense discipline and leadership development I quickly advanced into an orange belt promotion in Taekwondo, being awarded a custom design uniform for future training of choice. I ended up being in training longer than I expected, having to unwillingly take a year off from beginning my college journey elsewhere, where I find myself today. In 2015 I was accepted and became a freshman at Eastern, and that very spring a Track and Field team was being built by Head Coach Mike Wilson.

He held the first announcement meeting for all athletes who desired to join. I walked in that room curious and hopeful at the same time. I’ll never forget the conversation with Wilson after the meeting concluded. I said, “Hello Coach, is it possible I join this Track team with no high school experience? Can you train me?” Wilson replied, “Yes we can, you don’t have to worry. This is our first year to begin building, we will be happy to have you with us.” Since that moment it has been quite an adventure. We began the team with about 24 athletes consisting of distance runners from cross-country, new incoming sprinters, and some who would overlap into multi events such as jumping, hurdles, and throws.

Being an athlete is partially about talent in what you know you can do, but most of your ability is discovered in training. My last two years have been spent learning the drills of a sprinter, obtaining the right mindset, exploring durability, pushing myself beyond limits. I can honestly say that my time spent has been well worth it, enduring minor injuries, at times despair, and sweet victory. Each passing year I have been able to see progress every moment spent on the line. Every race held the opportunity for another personal record.

What I love the most about sports is how it can develop character and faith. For about five years now I have been an ordained minister, having the chance to meet lovely people and visit beautiful places. While on my team I have met some of the funniest, determined, and hopeful friends, that have also become my family. For me whether I am in the blocks, or behind a pew, I get to witness the power of confidence, and that both natural and spiritual achievements require self-discipline.

I have never considered myself a very artistic person. Nevertheless, I’d like to share with you some extraordinary experiences on how art has played a role throughout my life, and hope to increase understanding of where we may find beauty. Flashback to 2007, I was a middle-schooler who enjoyed staying active, being social, and discovering new possibilities.

I remember as if it was yesterday, my charter school’s music teacher was selecting multiple students (there were about 30 of us) to practice and explore being in a band. One day I was escorted out of class and summoned by Mr. Ortiz for the selection process. As I walked through the classroom door, suddenly an instrument layout was placed in front of me with the question, “What instrument would you like to play?”. The question was both intriguing and difficult; I never thought I would learn a musical instrument. All I had done my whole life up until this point was sing.

Charlie Ortiz provided the opportunity for me to discover a new form of art in my life. As I tried to decide which instrument would attract me, he suggested, “Hector I see you as a potentially talented trumpet player”, from that moment a musical journey was born. From middle school into high school I spent my years constantly at after school practices, talent shows, music festivals, and gigs. One of the most memorable of them all was an October night in center city Philadelphia. The condensed band of about 15 members was preparing backstage in two dressing rooms at one of the city’s popular venues; the one and only broad street Kimmel Center.

Another way art has influenced my life is through journaling and storytelling. Since the age of 12 I regularly wrote about life-changing experiences. Once an idea ignited in my heart I couldn’t resist the need to express in depth its full complexity. Why do I find beauty in the art of writing? How I grew up shaped my perspective of journaling. Would you believe me if I told you at around the age of 5, I was mute? Words were not my form of expression, but instead I found I could communicate best with sound. I could not comprehend speech, but understood being spoken to from others. Later on as I eventually learned to speak, I ran into another mental roadblock: difficulty reading.

From elementary to middle school I always remained below basic reading levels. Around 7th grade I was introduced and placed into an academic reading program that would help students develop reading habits and comprehension. Afterwards, I quickly excelled in English courses reading and analyzing challenging literature and placed into honor courses, then AP English senior year of high school.

I have seen beauty in display through life’s greatest moments whether challenging or victorious. Back in 2007 I found myself surrounded by dirt roads, clay housing, and a huge crowd of children of all ages. This was my first time to ever leave the country from my hometown, Philadelphia. I embarked on a missionary trip into Honduras where we traveled to both poverty-ridden and beautiful areas. Now, growing up I have always been accustomed to embracing diversity, for it was all around me. If you moved an inch into another region of Philly, it was expected that you’d meet a completely different ethnicity and culture. We tend to have pride in knowing or at least a “fake it til you make it” type of attitude with challenges, because everyone would rather impress than be direct. 1) Do not attempt to be a “savior” of the people; approach them humbly

2) Be cautious of beforehand (negative) presets of where you are going

3) Act as a child; excited and free

4) Embrace every single moment, ever-learning, and build community

Being a respecter of persons, backgrounds, or beliefs is not an overnight process, but requires some training or discipline of our own body. Sensitivity develops after we have declared ourselves lesser to a matter. I believe this is where the practice of humbleness takes effect, allowing us to be open-minded and create a hunger to explore beyond what we are familiar with. Jesus constantly proclaimed the kingdom of God to be opposite/backwards to what we have already conformed to. The Apostle Paul writes, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). Let not society determine our way of treating people who are different than us, but we ourselves choose to be gentle, loving, and honorable with one another, remembering we are all a breed of the Trinity.

The Student Government Association (SGA) functions as a primary department within college communities. They take on the responsibility of making influential changes that will last and spark interest among the student body. Here at Eastern University, student leaders are ready to listen up and tackle big and small issues alike, with the hopes to see the college reach its full potential.

Many freshmen may not know this, but visitation did not always have such flexible timing. The old policy hours were 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday (excluding Wednesday), and 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Due to the persistence of last year’s SGA executive board, visitation took off in another direction that most say is for the better. SGA President Gianna D’afflisio and Executive Board VP Rachael Graham were willing to provide that side of the policy change process.

A debate over what hours benefit the campus community as a whole was what spurred SGA action. D’afflisio says, “From all of the issues at hand, visitation policy was the biggest area of dissatisfaction.” Once SGA received comments regarding the matter, they immediately went straight to work. The board decided to collect feedback and data from the students to know the range of hours they felt was most appropriate and considerate to others. A survey was conducted and word quickly spread, recommending every student participate in a one-time chance. D’afflisio emphasized, “The policy was about 12 years over from its previous change. We collected much research from students, staff, and the CCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities), which is a policy system used to compare with other Christian Universities around the country.”

For best results, a trial run had to take place in order to determine its success at EU. The trial run for visitation was a huge factor in the voting process. SGA and staff paid close attention to see whether changed hours would increase the amount of fines and rules broken; if so, the proposal would have been denied. Graham concluded that, “The numbers stood quite low for the trail run, would supported the decision to stay permanent once complete. Two meetings were held for the change; first discussion then voting. This was very significant because most policy changes do not occur only after two meetings.”

What’s next? SGA has potential future projects, and hopes to better the EU community. Two possible upcoming goals are to create a solid recycling program at Eastern, such as more green bin access around campus, and accommodate a new policy for on-campus apartment residence in regards to meal plans. No promises have been made regarding when or how these may be accomplished. Both D’afflisio and Graham are happy to be leading the way for Eastern’s student government, and they encourage students to voice their opinions in order to help fulfill their dreams.
