Playing with a purpose

Christian rock band Calling Out Closer is set to play a benefit concert at Eastern. Formed in 2008, Calling Out Closer has been playing the music that they enjoy while promoting a positive Christian message.

For two and a half years they have had a growing fan base and have promoted themselves through independently selling their music online and playing shows, including a set on Philadelphia’s major rock station, Radio 104.5.

Behind keyboard and vocals is Eastern alum Ben Smither, who is excited to be back on campus for the concert.

The band is playing at Eastern to raise money for the grassroots organization. Operation Net. Spearheaded by sophomore Kali Fairchild, Operation Net aims to send mosquito nets to areas of the world where malaria is prevalent in order to prevent its spread.

For three dollars, students gain entry to the concert, and all of the money raised is used to purchase nets for the organization.

Operation Net meets Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in the Baird library.

All students interested in catching some good music while supporting a worthy cause are invited to the Gough Great Room on September 19 at 7 p.m.
