Decades of violence, dictatorship and poverty have plagued Haiti, a small country that shares a Caribbean island with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, a fact that was brought to the world’s attention after the massive earthquake in early 2010. It left Haiti’s capital, along with the majority of the densely-populated island, in rubble. In spite of the immediate global response to the destruction, recovery has been slow due to internal governmental strife. This most recent disaster has only added to the severe underdevelopment of Haiti’s infrastructure, economy and society.
