There can be no question that Eastern University is home to many talented, inspirational professors. However, their knowledge and expertise go far beyond the classroom. Many of Eastern’s own have published books, journals and articles on subjects ranging from theology to dance.
Director of Advising and Lecturer in Christian Ethics, Professor Julie Vemeer Elliott was published in the New York Times and in Christianity Today back in 2008. Her articles connect ethics, theology and reality television.
Dr. Phillip Carey, philosophy professor and Scholar-in-Residence, has written three books about Augustine, all of which were published by the Oxford Press. His most recent and best-known work, “Good News for Anxious Christians,” has been given rave reviews in Christianity Today as well as on many independent websites.
Karen Clemente, professor of dance, has had her work featured in a variety of journals and publications. She also contributed substantially to the Journal of Dance Education in an issue about dance and spirituality.
Recently, English professor Anne Francois published “Rewriting the Return to Africa: Voices of Francophone Carribean Writers.” Her book explores race, culture and gender and has been a definite success.
Rebecca Gidjunis, also an English professor, has had her poetry published in The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, The Cincinnati Review, Quarter After Eight and the 2008 anthology Woman.Period. Gidjunis’ poetry chapbook, “The Schwenkfelders” was co-winner of the 2009 Keystone Chapbook Prize and published by Seven Kitchen Press. This collection is focused on poems about her ancestors.
“Publishing a book was a wonderful experience,” Gidjunis said. The most wonderful part of having her work in print was that she was able to dedicate it to her grandmother, Mollie. Mollie is Gidjunis’ hero and the keeper of their family history. Mollie passed away from cancer this year.
“Having this book published while she was still alive was one of the greatest experiences of my life … she was so supportive and proud that I thought our family history was worth recording,” Gidjunis said.
Eastern professors are sure to continue impacting the world not only through their teaching, but also through their writing. “I am so grateful that I was able to preserve and playfully imagine our family’s history through this project and make my grandmother smile at the memories.” Gidjunis said.
