October heat impacts students’ fall activities

Did summer ever truly end? Although Eastern students have been back to school for about a month and are already busy with assignments, the weather hasn’t caught up. Temperatures are still reaching 80 degrees most days with high humidity.

Fall is typically known as “sweater weather.” The fall weather in the past few years has typically ranged from a high of 68 degrees to a low of 48 degrees. Recently, weather trends have been warmer than past years with far more warm days overall. The mornings are chilly while the afternoons are warmer, making it difficult to figure out what outfits are appropriate to fit the feel of the day.

Global warming is causing this drastic change in weather conditions, making it harder for most people to dress appropriately for their daily lives. The changes are causing seasonal allergies to hit harder while athletes and students are trying to adjust to these changes in day-to-day challenges.

Eastern University athletes are at the front of these weather trend dilemmas as they are practicing at different times of the day, often several days per week. Out-of-season spring athletes are faced with the chilly, humid mornings as they work to stay in shape, while in-season athletes must overcome sunny, hot afternoons for practices and games.

Women’s Lacrosse practices are at 6 a.m., and the weather during this time can be cold but warm up quickly. Deciding whether to wear shorts or sweatpants is a daily decision that is difficult to make. Outfits are not the only problem. Running in the cold is not something the team is prepared for, as it is harder to breathe, according to one player. Throughout practice, it gets warmer but is still difficult to dress for the rest of the day, especially for those who have class right after practice.

Women’s Soccer has practice right around 5 p.m. and the weather can be extremely hot. One team member commented on the difficulty of staying hydrated throughout the day in order to feel her best at practice.

Students, be careful of hot weather during a typically cool season! Be sure to stay hydrated and check the weather predictions when preparing for the day.
