In May of 1940, the future of more than 335,000 English and French soldiers looked grim as they huddled on the beaches of Dunkirk, France. As the enemy closed in on them, all hope of escape and rescue had died. In desperation, King George VI of England called for his country to unite in a National Day of Prayer. People gathered in churches across the country to pray that the stranded soldiers would be delivered from the hands of evil. Much to the world’s surprise, nine days later they were, indeed, saved.
The people of Great Britain prayed for a miracle and they received one; they believed God would provide the soldiers with a means of escape. In Matthew 17:20, Jesus Christ states, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (NIV). It was thought to be impossible to rescue 335,000 soldiers, but God provided a way to do the impossible. Over seven-hundred boats belonging to ordinary citizens left Britain for the shores of France and 335,000 soldiers were saved.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Those who prayed for a miracle at Dunkirk did not see what Dr. King called “the whole staircase”; they only knew that they had to take the first step.
Today, many students wonder what their future will hold. We sometimes find ourselves unsure of our direction and our purpose. And thus, we feel confused, lonely, frustrated, anxious or stressed. To get through these difficult times, I urge you to turn to Christ and take each day as it comes. In Matthew 6:34, Jesus states, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (NIV). God is always by our side, and he will never abandon us. He came through for the soldiers at Dunkirk and He will come through for you. All we need to do is to have a little faith.
