Miss Information

Dear Miss Information,

I just moved into my dorm about a month ago. My roommate and I were randomly assigned before school started, so we talked a little bit about our room’s dynamic and how to coexist with one another. We agreed on the importance of keeping the room organized and smelling nice, no matter what. Since the move-in, I cannot tell you the last time I saw my floor. The room smells as if there was a dead rodent somewhere under all the stuff, and it’s not my stuff. I feel so dirty all the time, and I don’t know what to do or how to handle the situation without making things awkward between us. I don’t want to insult her. Please help!

Sincerely, Smells from a Distance

Dear Smells from a Distance,

This situation is something that many people go through during their time in college. Most would suggest starting with having a conversation, but I know that doesn’t always work. Starting with a chore chart is a basic way to organize any space and keep it clean. It holds both parties accountable. You could start one and ask your roommate to partake in the efforts. If that doesn’t work, then I would make a gift basket. In the gift basket, you can put items such as Febreeze, essential oils and wall plug-ins to hopefully help make the room smell better. Tell your roommate someone left it by the door to your room, and maybe she’ll take the hint. If this all fails, there is only one solution that will solve the problem. As a last result, I would throw her stuff out the window because then it would be out of sight and out of mind. Be sure to do this when she is home with her family for the weekend, so you don’t get caught. You might have some problems to solve later on, but that is a problem that can be dealt with later!

Sincerely, Miss Information
