The Eastern University Women’s Basketball team looks to build upon their appearance in the MAC Freedom Tournament last year and try to go further this year. With only one senior lost from the team due to graduation, their experience from the previous season can pay off as they go throughout this season improving game after game. With four seniors on the team this year, the under class-men can learn from them and make an impact on the success of the team. Before the team dives into the conference match-ups, there is business to take care of when cross street Cabrini comes to Eastern’s house for “The Battle of Eagle Road”. After that, some other non conference match-ups to note is the Nov 21st meeting with Messiah College at home. Rosemont College, another local school, will visit Eastern on Dec. 6th.

In between Christmas and New Years, the women’s basketball team will go to Cabrini for a set with Widner and Rowan in the Cabrini College Classic. Conference play for the team begins on January 3rd when Desales comes to St Davids. In conference play, every team plays every other team twice to determine the seeds that the eventual top four teams in the conference will receive. This all culminates with the MAC Freedom Tournament on February 21st and 24th, if Eastern goes that far. “Conference play is always big, because when it starts we want to get everything together in terms of making sure we hit the big plays that we need to. Conference wide, the field looks pretty solid this year, so every game is going to come down to whoever shows up when it matters”, senior guard Amanda Riff said.

Key players to watch this season are the four seniors on the team that will take on the responsibility of leading in the critical moments. Amanda Riff, Taylor Azer, Taylor Price, and Amber Anderson, with the experience that they have accumulated, will make an impact both on the court and as mentors to the lower class-men. “Everyone has their roles that contributes to the team in their own way, so everyone will be a huge factor our success” said Riff. After going 17-9 overall and 8-6 in the conference last year, the Eastern Women’s Basketball keeps one goal in mind; to get better each game so that they can be successful when it counts come playoff time. Preseason practices for the Eagles are underway, and so the hard work leading up to the 2017-18 season has begun. We wish all of the players and coaches luck! To understand the true significance of the city of Houston Texas’s first World Series championship, you would first have to understand that a story you would never imagine had taken place. First of all, when the professional baseball team called the Astros lost a franchise record 111 games in 2014, an article out of the Sports Illustrated front cover had predicted them to win the World Series three years later, in 2017. As a team just trying to fit into the American League where they moved to in 2013, the Astros struggled to get a winning team together to make a playoff run. A slew of ownership, management, and coaching changes, along with well thought out draft choices and trades had put Houston back on the radar.

In 2015, they made their first playoff appearance as a member of the American League, where they lost to the Kansas City Royals in the division series, who would go on and win that year’s World Series. The following year for the Astros was a step back, where they missed the playoffs altogether even though they had a winning record (over .500). That was a sign of things to come as the 2017 season got underway. In April and May, they started out like the division contenders that they were called to be — winning 38 games and losing only 16 games during those two months. June and July featured more of the same, winning 31 games and losing 20. August was a not so great month for the Astros, and for the city in general, highlighted by the greatest natural disaster to strike the Houston area.

Hurricane Harvey dumped 50 inches of rain and caused the city to go underwater. With all the devastation and heartbreak, the Astros compiled a 11-17 mark for the month with most of the losses before the hurricane struck. That was when the Astros came together and dedicated the rest of their season to the city recovering from the magnitude of such a natural disaster as Hurricane Harvey. Down the stretch toward the playoffs, it was clear to everyone that the Astros were not to be denied a playoff spot. They went 21-8 in the final month, while keeping the town that they play for embedded in their hearts. The Astros finished the season 101-61, the best record in franchise history.

First stop in the playoff road was Boston, where in four games they eliminated the Red Sox and set a League championship series date with the Yankees. Despite facing a wild card team, the Yankees were not going to make things easy for the Astros, who took them to the limit to decide the American League Pennant. The Astros got the final blow, earning their first world series trip in twelve years, back when they were part of the National League. Their opponent in the World Series was baseball’s best team in terms of record in 2017, the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a well competitive series as the Astros and Dodgers went to the limit of seven games to decide the winner. In the seventh and final game, the motto that the Astros made since the Hurricane called “Houston Strong” came to life, scoring early and often to get a five run advantage heading into the later innings. Although the final run scored belonged to Los Angeles, the 2017 World Series belonged to the Houston Astros. For the first time in the 55 year history of the team, the people of Houston can proudly say those three magic words, “World Champion Astros!”

Recently, before I went to sleep one night I looked at the book of Exodus. Specifically, the story about how Moses led the Israelites out of the land of Egypt and the migration into the promised land. Along the way, they made a pit stop at Mount Sinai, where God gave the people the Ten Commandments, one being, ““Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8, NRSV). I pondered this verse for quite some time. As I thought more about the deeper meaning of it, I began drawing thoughts about it back to the beginning of this world. When God created the heavens and the earth, six days were used to make it all happen. Then on the seventh day, he rested and made the day holy because of all the work he had done the first six days of the earth.

In modern times, we as Christians use the Sabbath (Sunday) to worship the one that gave us the pathway to sanctification so that we may love God with all of our hearts. Each Sunday, we take time to remember the risen savior; who through his sacrifice on the cross and resurrection, salvation can be obtained through Christ Jesus. People worship in many ways; certain beliefs may be different, but all serve one common purpose: giving God the glory. As for me, being brought up within the church by the Wesleyan tradition particularly the United Methodist Church, I consider being part of a loving christian community as an essential part of the pathway to an eternity of walking with Jesus. With a supportive church community, making a difference in the world can become a reality, as well as contribute to evangelizing to those in need of hearing the good news of Christ. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist church puts this in simple terms saying, “The readiest way which God takes to draw a man to himself is, to afflict him in that he loves most, and with good reason; and to cause this affliction to arise from some good action done with a single eye; because nothing can more clearly show him the emptiness of what is most lovely and desirable in all the world.”

Okay, so how do we express to others that we can tell the world that we are initiated into following the will of Christ? For this, we remember that through baptism we are incorporated into God’s mighty acts and given new birth by the water and spirit. Furthermore, through baptism we reject the power of sin and ready ourselves to begin the journey as a follower of Christ. Communion is a way we can continue to be reminded of how thankful we are of God’s presence among us. We have an “open table” in the United Methodist Church meaning that anyone can come and partake in the sacrament of holy communion, which works because we believe that God’s presence is felt when we partake in communion. In the Lord’s Supper, God feeds us, sustains us, and empowers us to live as Christians in the world. That is why I worship and give God all the glory, because he made the way through his son so that I would experience salvation. As John Wesley sums it up, “May we all thus experience what it is to be not almost only, but altogether Christians! Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jesus, knowing we have peace with God through Jesus Christ, rejoicing in hope of the glory of God, and having the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Ghost given unto us!” Amen!

Washington was another playoff team last year but were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Division Series. The Nationals are led by Dusty Baker, who is a long time manager yet this is only his second year with the team. Max Scherzer, Jayson Werth, Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper are the key players for the Nationals. In the National League side of the playoffs, the Chicago Cubs will be earning a trip to their second consecutive fall classic and try to do what no NL team had done since the mid 1970’s — win the big one back to back.

There are three main contenders for the American League representative in the fall classic. Cleveland, the returning league champion, will have revenge on its mind as it makes its postseason voyage back to the big show. No one will soon forget their record setting 22 game win streak they created in mid August to mid September that surged them into a 102 win season, their first 100+ win season in team history. Led by Terry Francona, the high powered lineup that they have should prove to be supreme in their path back to the fall classic. The other team to watch from the American League is the Houston Astros. Another 100+ win team in the regular season made key trades in order to secure their spot in the postseason highlighted by the arrival of pitcher Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers. Led by manager A.J Hinch, the Astros are primed to go far in the playoffs and try to reach the fall classic for the second time in their history. In the scope of the American League side of the playoffs, there will be a highly contested League Championship series between both Cleveland and Houston with Cleveland eventually winning the series in seven games to go to their second straight classic.

So, will we see an encore of Cubs vs Indians in the fall classic? The following days will answer those questions. It’s October after all. Anything can happen.

On Aug. 26 2017, Floyd Mayweather Jr. put his undefeated boxing record on the line against UFC star from Ireland, Conor McGregor. How this fight came to be is a story like no other, resulting in two people from different fighting backgrounds coming together for one epic fight.

In Dec. of that year, Mayweather responded to McGregor’s comments and relationship with the media by saying, “They say he talk a lot of trash and people praise him for it, but when I did it, they say I’m cocky and arrogant.” Jan. 2016 brought a lot of optimism that a Mayweather vs. McGregor fight would happen. Less than a month later, rumors began to swirl about a matchup, culminating when Mayweather sought to make a deal to fight against McGregor. Finally, in May, the two gentlemen agreed to box each other in Las Vegas on Aug. 26. Mayweather began to dominate later. Landing 58 percent of his power punches was a clear sign of this.

Mayweather’s body punches were more damaging than McGregor being fatigued from “boxing for the first time” because of the stamina required to have a good shot in a boxing match.

Mayweather won.

McGregor did not.

Nor did the pay-per-view outage ruin a good fight.

Over the past 148 years of professional baseball, people from all backgrounds have joined a team to partake in America’s pastime. Every great sport has its different milestones and achievements, and baseball is no different. According to FiveThirtyEight, which does data analysis of teams and makes predictions based on past performances and projections of other teams, the Dodgers have the most talented team, not just compared to other teams in their division, but compared to all of baseball.

Sports forecasters have predicted how the Los Angeles Dodgers were going to compete against the other teams in the National League West division. As of April, the Dodgers’ 14-12 record did not impress many of the doubters, ,who believed the team was going to be a fluke after their late playoff departure last year. However, this record was a big sign of great events to come, as the team got better in all aspects of the game as the season progressed. To put this in to perspective, FiveThirtyEight analyzed different points of the season using the Elo system. The Elo system is described as such: “Elo is a simple but elegant system that can be tuned and customized endlessly to incorporate available data. In our baseball Elo system, each team has a rating (the average is about 1500), and after every game, the winning team gains some Elo points while the losing team loses the same number of points. The number of points exchanged is based on the chances our model gave each team to win the game and the margin of victory; a win by a big underdog results in a bigger exchange of Elo points than a win by a favorite, and the larger the margin of victory, the larger the exchange.” The Elo system is certainly a powerful way to determine a team’s outcome, but how can it be effective using raw data that was compiled from previous seasons? FiveThirtyEight explained it this way: “Thanks to Retrosheet, we’ve collected game results and box scores back to 1871 and used them to create an Elo-based rating system and predictive model for baseball that incorporates home-field advantage, margin of victory, travel, rest and most importantly starting pitchers. The ratings are also adjusted for park and era effects and account for the fact that favorites are more likely to win in the postseason than in the regular season.”

So let’s now put the Dodgers’ season in perspective in this manner. At the beginning of the season, the team had a 77 percent chance to make the playoffs, according to FiveThirtyEight; now, there is almost a 100 percent chance that the team will reach the playoffs. The most interesting part of all these statistics is the Dodgers’ chance of winning the World Series. At the beginning of the season, the Dodgers had an 11 percent chance of winning the Commissioner’s Trophy come Oct. Remarkably, the possibility of winning has increased to 33 percent. Even though it is just a 22 percent increase from the beginning of the season, it is still a major achievement, considering the chance of the other five teams that qualify for the playoffs with the Dodgers. The other five teams predicted to qualify for the playoffs have less than a 10% chance to win the World Series. As Yogi Berra, the late Hall of Fame catcher, put it, “It ain’t over, till it’s over.” Overall, the Dodgers are a team that is

looking to make a huge splash the rest of this year. With the emergence of rookie First Baseman Cody Bellinger, overcoming the injuries of stars like Clayton Kershaw and Yu Darvish, and the pursuit of the single season record for a team; they have what it takes to use the success they have accomplished during the regular season and hopefully translate that into a great showing in the playoffs.

From April 26 to 28, the City of Brotherly Love will host the 2017 NFL Draft. It will be the first draft in Philadelphia since the draft began in 1936. Back then, the draft was less in-depth, as the players who were drafted were only split into the eight teams of the old National Football League. Also, the venue was not so grand as it is in the modern day, as the first draft was just located in a hotel. The popularity of the draft increased in 1970 with the merger of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. Since then, countless numbers of players have started their NFL careers with whichever teams that choose to draft them.

In this year’s draft, the 32 current teams will give young football players the chance to make it in the pros. The Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals will have the most draft picks with 11 each, while the Atlanta Falcons and the Buffalo Bills will have six. This year will be like no other because of the prime location of the event. It will be the first draft to be held outside, presented in front of a colossal number of NFL fans before the “Rocky” steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend at least a portion of the three-day event.

With a great crowd comes great preparation. The city of Philadelphia has already closed off the area around the Art Museum at Eakins Oval in advance of the crowds. While the preparation is crucial to the event’s success, concerns have come up regarding the environmental aspect of a huge gathering. With the prominence of trash build-up, the city will use its resources to make sure the NFL draft experience will be as safe as can be.

With the NFL Draft soon arriving, let’s take the opportunity to go down memory lane as we remember some of the names that would become the NFL players they are today. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterback Carson Wentz with the second overall pick. For the Villanova Wildcats, the 2015-16 season was one to remember. Led by four-year starter, captain and Langhorne, Pennsylvania native Ryan Arcidiacono, the Wildcats started the season ranked no. 11 in the AP Poll with high expectations after a Round of 32 departure in the NCAA Tournament the previous year by NC State. Villanova won all of their games to reach the Regional Final against Kansas, where they barely beat them to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2009. Many people thought that they could go somewhere they had never been since 1985: to win a National Championship. The Final Four game against Oklahoma was a precursor to what was to come as the Wildcats made 71 percent of their shots to beat the Sooners by 44 points, a Final Four record. The committee put Villanova as the overall number one seed for the first time in program history. Unfortunately, on March 18, the Wildcats fell to Wisconsin 65-62 in the Round of 32. It was quite the disappointment to fall short of the goal, but Villanova has a lot to be proud of. The senior class, consisting of Hart, Jenkins, Reynolds and Denny Grace, had the most wins for a single class in Villanova history with an overall record of 123-16. With new faces ready to take the leadership roles next season, things will be quite different come next fall when they take the court.

On Feb. 22, Eastern University’s College of Education partnered with a grant program called the Eligible Partnership Grant Program. Awarded by Governor Tom Wolf and Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera, more than $3 million was given to three universities: Eastern, Cabrini and LaSalle.

All three universities are designating these funds to form the Early Learning Instructional Coaching Program (ELPIC). With LaSalle leading the program, its intent is to prepare teachers to become school administrators.

Eastern’s Interim Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Harry Gutelius, explains, “Eastern’s College of Education is excited to be a partner in the new ELPIC grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This grant will enable us to prepare 40 teachers over a two-year period to become school administrators in the state of Pennsylvania. Since all of these teachers will come from Philadelphia and the immediate surrounding area, we are very pleased to have the opportunity to train so many who will be leaders in public education in our region.”

The new program is bolting out of the gate with the first course starting shortly.

Cabrini education professor Dr. Thomas Conway says, “What this grant allows us to do now with principals is to give them framework, a perspective of coaching, which some have, some are good coaches, but not everyone is. So this will pay tuition money for people who want to become future principals themselves. Here at Cabrini, that allows us to bring on 20 new students for this first year and then 20 new students next year, too. Their courses have been infused with not only the things they have to learn to become a principal or school leader, but were also added in instructional coaching.”

Eastern will likely see similar results in the number of students enrolled as the program goes into effect.
