RM: Can you tell me a little bit about how it works?

BL: Tru-Zone uses lenses made of the same material as small phone screens and Apple watches, in unison with biomechanical body scan software (Posture Co. would be an example) to create the perfect strike zone for each batter in real time. The way it works is that the lenses have the body scan software in them, and the umpire then presses a button on the side of the glasses and they scan the body of the batter in front of them. The software automatically finds body points such as the shoulders, hips, knees, etc. and then creates the perfect strike zone for that batter using these body points and the official width of home plate. That information can then be saved in a database so that the next time that batter is up (whether in this game or some other game) the umpire will have that strike zone in the glasses ready to go.

In addition to the glasses themselves, there would be specially made microchips put into the cores of the baseballs that the players were using, and once synced to the glasses, the ball could be tracked with the utmost accuracy (more accuracy than the system that Major League Baseball currently uses) from the pitcher’s hand to the plate. The zone in front of the umpire would then flash if the any part of the ball went through it, and the umpire would know for certain whether the pitch was a ball or a strike. So now, not only are the glasses helping the umpire see the perfect strike zone in front of him, but they are also helping him be sure that the pitch did in fact pass through the zone.

RM: Any other intended use for these special glasses?

BL: These glasses, although designed for umpires, are not limited to just this kind of use. We could potentially put a small camera on the glasses and provide instant replay of the pitch from the umpires’ perspective with or without the zone included. When was the last time you saw that on an MLB broadcast? The glasses could also be used as a training tool for pitchers and catchers. A catcher could wear the glasses and then simulate a certain batter’s strike zone for a pitcher to practice on in the bullpen or at practice. Pitchers would know for sure if they were hitting their spots and they could even look at their velocity, rotation, and drop of their pitches with instant replay from the catcher’s perspective. The stat tracking and training possibilities that Tru-Zone offers increase its value beyond being the best (if not only) umpire’s aid on the market.

RM: Who is your target market for this product?

BL: Originally, my target market was going to be youth leagues and umpires to offer something that could help novice umpires learn how to call an accurate strike zone and increase accuracy of strike-ball calls in tournament play. However, after considering the thoughts and ideas of the sharks at Shark Tank, I am now focusing more on the professional and high-level collegiate baseball markets. This product will not be cheap to make, but the potential it has for improving the game of baseball is unprecedented. In the words Bob Bruce, one of this year’s sharks, “This is what baseball needs.” The professional levels need this technology and quite frankly, they are the only ones who can afford it.

RM: Where do you envision this product five to ten years down the road?

BL: If everything works out with patenting and I can find some engineers to help me build this product, I could see this product being the new medium for stat tracking in Major League Baseball. The current system they are using uses multiple cameras in unison with radar, and it is known to be inaccurate in tracking pitches from anywhere from fractions of an inch to several inches from their actual locations in the game. That margin of error is simply too great for a sport like baseball, where you win and lose on matters of millimeters. If everything works out, I can see Tru-Zone being the future of umpiring and stat tracking in all of professional baseball.

As the 2017-18 school year comes to a close, Eastern University Sports have given us moments to remember as the athletes represented us in the sports that they participated in. Here are some of the top moments from the year gone by:

Men’s Soccer Winning Big in the Battle of Eagle Rd (9/23): A 3-0 win over rival Cabrini made that Saturday night even sweeter for the home team. “I thought we did a great job early in the game connecting and forcing tempo,” Head Coach Jeremy Payne said after the match. “We were interesting and we created chances through the first half. Jacob and Jadon [Ramsing] were really good in that and I thought Jake Cahill did a nice job getting into the attack as well.”Quentin Keibler played the first 83 minutes in goal before Ben Lochstampfor came on to finish the match. Cross Country Teams have great showing at MAC Championships (10/28): The Men’s and Women’s cross country teams had impressive races this day in Doylestown finishing 3rd and 5th respectively out of 17 runners from each of the races. On the men’s side, Doug Kramer, a freshman, finished in seventh place to lead the Eastern pack. Jon Thomas, crossed the line right after Kramer to finish eighth. The course, according to Head Coach Mike Wilson, did not set up to be super fast, but Thomas and Kramer held their positions in the top pack throughout the run. Kenny Deloff was the third Eastern finisher. Wilson said that the freshman had the run of the day for the team. Deloff has been the fourth or fifth finisher for the Eagles for much of the year. He finished in 21st overall to earn Third-Team All-MAC recognition. Bryton Henry joined Deloff in that honor with a 28th place finish. Rusty Batykefer finished five spots behind him to close out the Eastern scoring. In the Women’s race, Megan Bernotas led the way for the Eagles with a sixth place finish. The finish was up a spot from the program’s sixth-place finish in 2016, and Head Coach Mike Wilson was pleased with the progress his team has shown. “Megan had a strong run,” Wilson said. “She is learning to be a lead runner for us and she committed to running with the front pack today. This was her best run this season, and it bodes well for future seasons.”

Men’s Basketball Plays Division 1 Lehigh in Exhibition (11/19): Eastern University Men’s Basketball played in a rare mid-season exhibition game at Division I Lehigh University. Darius Washington scored a game-high 22 points, but the host Mountain Hawks shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away to a 95-70 win. The Eagles scored the opening basket on a sharp pass from Victor Peña to Gabe Perez and were tied 10-10 at the first media timeout. Lehigh took advantage of a couple transition opportunities to put together a 12-1 run and pull away to an 11-point lead before Washington connected on his first of five 3-pointers on the afternoon.Lehigh built the lead to 45-29 at half and that differential remained for most of the second half as the Eagles used an inside-out approach to get good shots and score but could put together defensive stops against the sharp-shooting Division I opponent.

Price Makes Eastern history (12/16): Taylor Price became the fifteenth player in Eastern Women’s Basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career. She joins a small group of athletes including Emily Lavin who joined last school year. Villanova had quite a run in the NCAA Tournament this year en route to their second national title in three years. Remember when Kris Jenkins hit the three pointer to win the title a couple years ago? Well this time around it was pure dominance by Villanova, winning all of their tournament games by double digit margins, the first team to do it since North Carolina in 2009. The first game Villanova played was in Pittsburgh when they faced the 16th seed Radford. Unlike the biggest upset in tournament history where UMBC defeated Virginia, a number one seed, no upset here as Villanova defeated Radford 87-61. Key players in that game were Jalen Bronson with 16 points, Omari Spellman with 7 rebounds, and Donte Divincenzo with 8 assists.

Next came a matchup with one of the emerging teams from the SEC, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Starting out slow in the first half, Villanova got the three pointers to fall as they ended Alabama’s season 81-58. Then, the Big 12 gauntlet lied ahead if Villanova wanted to go to the title game. West Virginia tested them all the way, but ultimately fell to Nova 90-78 in Boston.

The East Regional Final saw Villanova matched up against Texas Tech, and Elite 8 first timer. The three pointers continued to fall for Villanova as Texas Tech was humbled 71-59 to advance to their second Final Four appearance in three years. Kansas waited in the midst as the Jayhawks beat Duke in overtime to get to the Final Four. All of Kansas’s accolades were nothing of importance as Villanova defeated them 95-79 to advance to the title game.

Michigan would be the team that Villanova would face which had a storybook tournament run of their own. After hitting a miraculous buzzer beater to send Houston home and after beating the surprising Loyola Chicago squad, they were the ones to meet Villanova in the title game. Business as usual for the Wildcats as they defeated them 79-62 to win their third overall title and second in three years. Jalen Bronson was named the National player of the year and Donte Divincenzo was named the Final Four’s most valuable player. Congratulations to the Villanova Wildcats on a phenomenal season!

Tourney time is here, the most wonderful time of the year! A time where the unthinkable can happen. A time where heros emerge. A time where favorites are challenged. A time where the impossible can happen. Yes, indeed this is the most wonderful time of the year. Now you might be thinking to yourself, “Shucks, because of the first sixteen seed beating a number one seed for the first time, my bracket is so busted.”

Each year, people all around the country create brackets based off of whatever teams make it, and predict who’s got the luck to win it all come April. Some people often think that their bracket will be the first perfect in the history of the tournament. Well, I have news that will rethink how the bracket is done. Because, it is near impossible to create the perfect bracket. The odds are just slim to none. One in 9.2 quintillion to be exact. All because of the upsets that happen each and every year that make the tournament a bit unpredictable.

For this purpose, I am going to highlight a few teams that were not the number one, two, three, four, or even the fifth seed that won a national championship. They are seeds in the tournament that you would not expect to make it as far as they did because of various factors like a mediocre regular season or not winning a conference tournament title or having enough “quality” wins for the committee each year to include them in the big dance.

Nevertheless, these teams shocked everyone when they went and won the big dance and became forever remembered in their school’s history. Three teams in the history of the tournament that were upsets went on to win the whole thing. First of all, the 2013-14 Uconn Huskies for example were seeded number 7 in their region and went through their games averaging a winning margin of seven points per game to win their first national title in the post Jim Calhoun era. One of the teams that Uconn faced in the tournament was a future college basketball powerhouse in Villanova. In fact, the Wildcats themselves were not seeded high in the tournament in 1985 when they made the most unbelievable run in tournament history. Back in those days, there was no three point line and shot clock. The Wildcats in the national championship game made 79 percent of their shots en route to shock the defending champion at the time Georgetown and rewrite history.

However, the most improbable upset team to win it all won it a couple years before Villanova in 1983. NC State led by legendary coach Jim Valvano. With a 17-10 regular season record, the only way that NC State was going to make the big dance is if they won their conference tournament, which they did.

Then in the tournament, they had to win a close one with Pepperdine in double overtime, knock off a favorite in UNLV, beat Virginia for the second time in ten days, and Georgia too, in the final four to set up a game with Houston for the national championship. With five seconds left in the game, the iconic dunk that defined NC State for an eternity upset Houston and they were crowned national champions.

On my latest trip in the city of brotherly love, I ventured into Independence Mall and Old City and wondered if there was a place within Old City that is cheap where I can get a bite to eat. Within that block, there is a little restaurant on the lower level that features the smell of pizza and the sound of the grill. That place is Jules Pizza and Grill on 5th and South Sts. Given it was a Friday when I went, I decided to try them out for dinner that night. Normally, Jules is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday-Sunday from noon until 11pm. Jules has the look of a classic dinner feel without waiters and waitresses that I would usually expect from an Italian establishment.

In just seven and a half months of their existence, Jules continues to be a restaurant that tourists and residents alike will come to get a piece of pizza for lunch or dinner or even to try one of their Strombolis or steak sandwiches. Their menu is online if someone wanted to do pickup. With the emergence of countless eating and delivery apps such as Uber Eats and Postmates, this restaurant can deliver to more people than ever before. As I entered the restaurant, I noticed that the menu was written out on blackboards with chalk above the grills. They have a variety of great food ranging from slices of pizza to hoagies to wraps.

Since I am a college student, I am perpetually broke, so I went with the two slices of pizza deal with a soda on the side. All for just $5. Just what I would have expected from an Italian restaurant like Jules; the quality and service have met my expectations and then some. Besides having the pizza slice combo deal, there are other combo deals that Jules offers. For instance, at lunch time from eleven in the morning to three in the afternoon, Jules offers specials that are price reasonably between $7.99 and $8.99 respectively. They include cheese steak and french fries, chicken cheese steak and french fries, cheeseburger or turkey and cheese with french fries and four pieces of chicken fingers and french fries.

Not only does Jules have lunch specials, their appetizers are also inexpensive. They offer french fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, cheese fries, and more. There is always one type of appetizer or entree that people like in one way or another at Jules. In regards to the restaurant itself, a small quiet setting that allows the patron to enjoy in peace or have quality time with friends is just as satisfying as the food and drink itself. Jules Pizza and Grill is on 5th and South Streets in the Old City section of Philadelphia; another great restaurant that fits the vibe of the city of brotherly love.

Philadelphia, the trophy has come. Your Eagles are the 2018 Super Bowl Champions. An amazing ride through thick and thin. From losing players throughout the season to injury like Carson Wentz, Jason Peters, and Darren Sproles; to all the naysayers trying to drag the team down when Nick Foles came in to replace Wentz after his knee tears, they never gave up. Super Bowl 52 was proof of that underdog mentality. Let me tell you a story of how everything went down that night. February 4th, 2018, a night Philadelphia will never forget.

Two football teams, both alike in dignity in cold Minnesota, where we lay our scene. The clash between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots could be compared to the story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17). New England playing in their tenth Super Bowl was going for their sixth win, while Philadelphia making its third Super Bowl appearance going for their first win in the big game ever.

Starting with field goals by both teams on their opening drives, the Eagles got the first touchdown of the night with a 34 yard pass from quarterback Nick Foles to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. The Eagle’s next scoring play came with just under nine minutes to go before halftime when running back LeGarrette Blount rushed 21 yards for the score. The two-point conversion failed made the game 15-3 in favor of the Eagles. The Patriots would answer however, with a field goal and a touchdown in that order to cut Philadelphia’s lead to just three. Then just before the end of the half, one of the best plays in Super Bowl history took place. With Jay Ajayi under center, he pitched the ball to Trey Burton who then passed the ball to guess who, Nick Foles of all people to put the side that is thought of as David in front at the half 22-12. This was the first time in Super Bowl history that a game went into halftime with 22-12 score.

The Patriots received the ball to begin the second half. Within three minutes, tight end Rob Gronkowski a.k.a Gronk found the end zone from five yards out to cut the lead to three again, and of course

doing his famous Gronk spike. Philadelphia answered five minutes later with a pass from Nick Foles to running back Corey Clement for 22 yards to extend the lead again. After a Jake Elliot field goal of 42 yards, Gronk gave the white shirts the lead with under ten minutes left in the game. Now, recent Super Bowl history has the team wearing white jerseys winning 12 out of the 13 previous ones. So, it made sense when they took the lead over the Eagles that people thought it was going to be another chapter in the dynasty; another accolade for Goliath.

With under three minutes to go, the improbable happened when tight end Zach Ertz made a fantastic eleven yard pass from “St Nick” himself to give the Eagles the lead for good. The catch was reviewed to make sure that he had possession the entire time and it was confirmed. A 46 yard field goal by Jake Elliott with just over a minute to go added insurance points that stretched the Eagles lead to 41-33. History was made long last when quarterback Tom Brady of the Patriots tried to throw a Hail Mary that was knocked to the ground to give the Philadelphia Eagles the biggest win in franchise history.

At long last! Philadelphia, underdogs no more! Congratulations! Let me mention some final words of gratitude. The 1980-81 team with Jaws (Ron Jaworski), Wilbert Montgomery, Dick Vermeil; thank you for the memories. The 2004-05 team with Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, Terrell Owens, Brian Dawkins, and Andy Reid; thank you for the memories. Those teams helped make the special group of players today make the team we now know as Super Bowl Champions!

Soon, we will be entering the most significant time in the year for Christians: the period of time between Ash Wednesday and Easter. This time allows us to give up something meaningful to ourselves in order to anticipate Christ’s death on Good Friday and Resurrection three days later on Easter Sunday.

As I pondered what I am going to do to honor the Lenten season, I figured I look back through history to see how different denominations in the Christian faith observe lent and how this tradition all ties together with Holy Week. As early as the third century, St. Irenaeus discussed Lenten preparation for Easter, talking about what the “forefathers” in faith- the apostles- did to prepare for Easter. However, in St. Irenaeus’ day, no church-wide consensus existed on how long the Lenten season should be. It wasn’t until the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) that “the 40 days of Lent” began to be discussed. St. Athanasius urged a 40-day fast, as did St. Cyril of Alexandria. Eventually, Pope St Leo made the determination that Christians must “fulfill with their fasts the apostolic institution of the 40 days,” an admonition that has remained in place ever since. Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of the lenten season, inaugurates the penitential and prayerful attitude of Lent. On this day, blessed ashes are placed on the heads of the faithful as a sign of mortification of the flesh with the words, “Dust thou art, and to dust thou shalt return.” After Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday, Christians refrain from saying Gloria in excelsis and Alleluia as a reminder that Lent is a season of trials and tribulation. Extraneous music is also not used during the Lenten season.

Because this is such a solemn time, the following verses from scripture help me understand what Lent is all about. As the scripture reads, “Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake” (Psalm 78:8-9, NRSV). So, you may be asking yourself, “Why is Lent 40 days?” The number 40 is in fact so significant in the Bible and in history altogether. In Genesis, when the great flood happened, it rained for 40 days and nights. The Israelites when the prophet Moses led them out of slavery in Egypt spent 40 years living in the wilderness because of their sinful being. Not to mention Moses himself spending 40 days on Mt Sinai reviving the Ten Commandments for the Israelites. Even when Jesus spent time preparing for his ministry, he spent 40 days in the wilderness and also got tempted by Satan a few times. Lent is also a derived word from the Anglo-Saxon word to ‘lengthen’. It comes during a time where the days are getting longer so we have the theoretical ability to stretch out and grow in the spirit.

We should not, therefore, place too much emphasis upon our own efforts to prepare for Lent. Just as the sun was thought to do the work of ‘lengthening’ the days during early Springtime, so it is the sun in the sense of God’s warmth and light that does this work in our ‘lengthening’ and growing in Christ. This image provides a comfort for us in our busy modern world, where hyperactivity can become the norm. Our role during Lent is to cooperate with God’s grace and initiatives, in a sense to relax in the presence of God, rather than force the pace with our own efforts. Next week is a great time to truly think about what the significance of Lent means and what we can do to commemorate that moment in time.

The road to the NFL’s greatest game, the Super Bowl is not as simple as advertised. Eight teams from two conferences compete for the two coveted spots in the greatest football game of the year. The journey was troublesome for some teams, but exciting for others as the points were scored and the games were played. In the end, only two teams have enough magic left in the tank to play the game of their lives. Let us look back at the road to the 2018 Super Bowl LII.

Starting with Wild Card weekend, the Tennessee Titans won their game against the Kansas City Chiefs 22-21. Down 21-3 at halftime, Tennessee fought back to win it, partly thanks to a pass to quarterback Marcus Mariota for a touchdown. The ball reflected off a Chiefs defender and Mariota caught it as he went into the endzone. The other wild card game in the AFC featured the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Buffalo, who was in the playoffs for the first time since 1999 gave Jacksonville a run for their money until the second half when the Jaguars scored a touchdown on a one yard run by tight end Ben Koyack and sealed the win.

On the NFC side, two teams from the same division squared off to see who would play the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional round. On the third meeting of the year, the Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints went back and forth scoring, but ultimately the Saints won 31-26 to meet the Vikings in the divisional round. The other wild card game in the NFC featured the Los Angeles Rams who were making their first playoff appearance since moving back to the City of Angels and the Atlanta Falcons the defending NFC Champions. The Falcons proved that they were the better team, with Matt Bryant

kicking four field goals to seal the 26-13 win.

The Divisional Round of the playoffs began with the defending NFC Champions going to Philadelphia to face the Eagles. A nail-biter to say the least; a goal line stand with a minute to go in the game sealed the Eagles 15-10 victory for their first trip to the conference championship game in 10 years. Their opponent in the NFC Championship game had not been decided until the next day, when the Minnesota Vikings took on the New Orleans Saints in an instant playoff classic, capped off by a 61 yard touchdown pass in the final seconds from Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs to give the Vikings the improbable 26-23 win.

In the AFC side of the divisional round, the Tennessee Titans were no match for Tom Brady’s New England Patriots as they moved on to the AFC Championship game with a 35-14 win. The other AFC Divisional Round Game featured the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. With a stout defence, the Jaguars pulled the upset over the Steelers 45-42 to meet the Patriots to decide the AFC Championship.

On Jan. 21, 2018, the two Super Bowl LII teams were determined by the AFC and NFC champions. The first semifinal game on the docket was the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots, playing for the AFC title. The Jaguars led by two touchdowns with a score of 14-3 in the second quarter, but as the second half unfolded, the Patriots did what they had done all season: comeback. With 2:48 to go in the game, quarterback Tom Brady completed a pass to wide receiver Danny Amendola for a game winning touchdown and a 24-20 win. It will be New England’s tenth Super Bowl appearance and eighth under the duo of Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick.

In the NFC title game later that evening, Philadelphia Eagles fans packed Lincoln Financial Field to see the Eagles take on the Minnesota Vikings for their third Super Bowl appearance in team history. After giving up a first drive touchdown, Philadelphia went on to score 38 unanswered points to win the game 38-7, erasing any doubts that the Philadelphia Eagles are the finalist team who will go head to head with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

Save the date and time: Febr. 4, 2018 at six p.m. Epic? A major understatement to say the least.

Finally, the 2 0 1 7 – 1 8 college basketball season is here and the thrill and excitement of a fast-paced game is back to put a loud dent in the mundane season of winter. March may seem a mile away but it is never too early to figure out who the contenders are this year for the national championship. So, with help from last year’s season as well as the recruits that were added to rosters, putting this year’s teams into shape, here is a snapshot of each of the major conferences in college basketball (and yes I consider the conference with Villanova in it.)

Atlantic Coast (ACC): Without a shadow of a doubt, this conference has been the standard for all other conferences when it comes to creating participants in the NCAA Tournament year after year. No wonder talented players want to play for these schools because of the tradition that they have. College Basketball cannot be complete without schools like preseason ranked #1 Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame consistently making their name known in the big dance. A whopping nine schools from this conference are projected to be in the tournament this year. That is 13 percent of the entire fi eld of 68 schools playing for the national title.

Big East: Over the past several years, the Big East had representation in the NCAA Tournament with Villanova, Xavier, Providence, and Butter being regular participants. Although Villanova from regular season standpoint is consistently on top year after year, come conference tournament time the past few years, anything can happen thanks to Seton Hall and Providence. With many teams from the conference this year ready to make a run, prepare yourselves for a fight to the top of the Big East. At least six teams from the Big East are predicted to make the NCAA Tournament.

Big Ten: The place to begin with this conference is to look at the squad that Michigan State has put on for this year. Ranked at #2 in the Preseason Poll, the Spartans have the talent to deliver in the clutch and represent the Big Ten well in the NCAA Tournament fi eld come March. Other teams are trying to make their voice heard as well such as Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State, Minnesota, and Illinois. A well represented conference in the big dance come March would bode well for the conference with seven schools predicted to be in it.

Big 12: When you look at this conference at a glance, you think to yourself, “Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KU!”; Kansas is a school that is consistently in the big dance via the conference tournament championship spot. They hold the regular season title for the conference every year since 2004; they don’t repair, they rebuild with the talent to continue to make strides to the ultimate goal. Other teams to watch this year that will challenge Kansas are Oklahoma, West Virginia, Baylor, and Texas. Seven teams from this conference are projected to make the big dance this year from this conference.

Southeastern(SEC): The SEC is going to be a sleeper conference but it also happens to be my favorite conference to cover because of the amount of sleeper teams that go to the tournament year after year. Kentucky, a regular participant, makes the conference champ bid a lock year after year. Pay close attention to Alabama this year as the nation’s number one recruit Collin Sexton tries to put Alabama in its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2012. Besides Kentucky and Alabama trying to make the fi eld, also look for Arkansas, Texas A&M and Missouri to make their impact on the big dance. In total, six teams are projected to make the tournament this year.

Pacific Twelve(PAC 12): Last but certainly not least, the PAC 12 is best known as the conference that UCLA plays in, since they won ten national championships in the 1960’s and 70’s under legendary coach John Wooden. In the present day, UCLA is not the only big name in this conference. Arizona and Oregon as of late have had an impact on the landscape of the PAC 12’s representation in the big tournament. Not much in the way of number of teams but four from the conference should be enough to keep everyone on their toes in the big one.
