In America, 34% of our population is obese. Maybe this is a statistic that the Eastern athletic department took into consideration when it sought the opportunity to finance a new weight room.

Anyone who has walked through the weight room to enter the gym or to shortcut through campus has noticed these considerable changes.

“There has been a desire on the part of the university for some time now to upgrade the equipment in the fitness center and provide an enhanced facility for the Eastern community to use for health, recreation and wellness,” Director of Athletics Brad Fields said.

“The opportunity came about through President Black’s initiative with Mr. Torggler, and because of the relationship, we were able to secure the equipment, have it installed, and re-open the fitness center rather quickly,” Fields said.

Both the faculty as well as the students are very excited about the changes. “I feel that the new stuff the athletic department brought in really shows that they care about the Eastern student community,” senior Eric Onderdonk said. “Since there are TV’s and more equipment to use, I can work out every night without a problem.”

It is not a rare thing to find athletes working out with teammates in the new weight room. “The new equipment gives me a better urge to work out, and it was really nice to come back from break with a new weight room” first-year Brandon Reichart said.

“Through the generosity of Mr. Torggler and his connection with the equipment company, the cost to the University was greatly reduced from what it would be for the all new equipment and an excellent maintenance contract we received,” Fields said.

The new weight room has sparked good attitudes from students and has been a big attraction for perspective students this semester.
