Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Within its population of over seven million citizens, the average annual income is below three hundred dollars. The country has been ravaged by governmental collapses, frequent civil wars and, most recently, a continuing and devastating drought and famine. Somalia’s economy is based on agriculture, making those natural disasters particularly devastating. These country-wide issues have produced one of the lowest life expectancies in the world, such that most citizens are expected to die by the age of fifty.
