Eastern’s graduating class of 2009 will have the pleasure of hearing from Sir Peter Vardy of England during the commencement ceremony.

Among his many accomplishments and awards, Vardy has met the Queen of England, who recognized him for his business’s excellent performance.

In 2001, Vardy received his knighthood from the Queen for Services to Business and Education.

Vardy established the Forum for Christian Leaders in 2006. The organization works with universities, schools and prisons in addressing issues such as housing, debt and rehabilitiation of ex-offenders.

Upon the passing of their father, Reg Vardy, in 1976, Vardy and his brothers continued their father’s Ford car dealership in his name.

In 1982, Vardy bought out his brothers from the Ford dealership. He continued his journey of entrepreneurship, buying franchises of Ford, Austin Rover, General Motors and other car companies.

Under Vardy’s management, the company grew and profited until it became known as one of the most successful motor retailers in Europe.

The Vardy Foundation was established by Vardy and his family in 1987 and it continues to support numerous causes and charities.

Specifically, the foundation establishes secondary schools in the U.K. that provide high standards of education with a distinctly Christian ethos. Emmanuel College, Trinity Academy, and King’s Academy in England are top-performing schools that educate students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Vardy has received awards such as Businessman of the Year in 1988 and the Motor Industry Outstanding Achievement Award. He was also made an honorary Doctor of

Business Administration at Sunderland University.

Vardy will be speaking at the College of Arts and Sciences commencement ceremony and the Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies and Esperanza College commencement ceremony.
