Located in West Africa, Liberia has a population of about 4 million people. Between the Americo-Liberian establishment in 1980 and the Liberian civil wars, which claimed the lives of 250,000 citizens, the country has been left with lingering political and economic instability. Today, as Liberia attempts to recover from the aftermath of the civil war and from related economic displacement, about 85% of the population lives below the international poverty line.
