On a rainy Thursday night at Eastern University; students, faculty, and staff were in for a treat as the men and women’s basketball teams showcased their talents in yet again, another successful Hoops Mania. The night was opened by a prayer from President David Black. Soon after, Eastern’s spirit team came onto the floor to fire up the packed crowd, giving away free t-shirts to the loudest fans. After introducing the new mascot Beaker, a faculty and staff intersquad game took place giving the crowd some good entertainment. Paul Trusty, Eastern basketball alum came to Hoops Mania to show his support for basketball programs, “I’m excited for the men and women’s seasons coming up; there are a lot of fans here to support them.” Upon entry into the gym, each student was able to place their name on a piece of paper into a bucket. Two names were drawn from that bucket and those were lucky students got to compete for various prizes. Several lucky fans entertained the crowd and walked away with free gift cards. The gym roared as both the men and women’s teams were introduced. Each player tossed a t-shirt into the crowd before getting ready for the next competition. “It was a great experience; I’m excited to see what Eastern basketball has in store for this season. Plus, you can’t beat a free shirt” said avid fan, Mark Royer. Both teams got to show off their talents, highlighted by a three point competition and a dunk contest. As fans grabbed free pizza and drinks, the night came to a close with both teams jumbling up their rosters to play in a friendly and entertaining game of basketball. “It’s great to see all the fans out here, I really love seeing the school spirit” said senior Center, Don Kaiser.
