Beautiful white lights, candy hearts, candles and pillows decorated the Jammin’ Java, creating the perfect atmosphere for the Student Activities’ second annual coffeehouse. As the event was held on February 10th, just a stone’s throw from Valentine’s Day, the theme this year was “Put a Little Love in It.”
The Jammin’ Java was even more full than usual, as crowds of Easterners dropped in to enjoy delicious treats and $1 off drinks. As if that weren’t enough, those in attendance were also blessed with the opportunity to hear a number of extremely talented students perform.
The night began at 8 PM. Each artist had ten minutes to take the stage—and take it they did. Audience members had the chance to enjoy the musical genius of sophomore Jared Gallagher, Audrey Gallagher, Steve Chandy, Megan Sherrill, Chelsea Davis, Michael Fuehrer, Josh Zimmerman, David Speak, sophomore Jenna Walthour, first year Corbin Payne, Justin Holdefer and sophomore Tevin Sharkey.
Jared Gallagher, who performed at last semester’s coffeehouse, gave excellent guitar and vocal performances of “Forever and a Day” by Far Less, “I Felt Free” by Circa Survive and “Drink In My Hand” by the Classic Crime.
Before and after the scheduled performances, the stage was open to anyone interested in taking the mic. For Paine, this was the highlight of the evening. Although he performed three songs during his 10 minutes (two originals—”Patience” and “Forget What I Said”—and one cover—”I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie), he also took advantage of the open mic time. When someone asked him to play “You’ve Got A Friend In Me,” he pulled off a phenomenal impromptu performance that got the crowd singing along. Payne had a great night and will “absolutely” be performing at future coffeehouses on campus.
Sharkey saw the advertisement for the “Put A Little Love In It” coffeehouse on the window of Jammin’ Java. He had never performed at an open mic or sang in front of people before, but he decided to give it a try. Sharkey and his friend sophomore Justin Holdefer played guitar, tambourine and African drum as they performed “Now That I Am With You,” a song that they had written for their girlfriends. Overall, Sharkey said, the night went well: “Everything looked very nice and homey … All the performers were amazing.”
Every last one of the musicians at the coffeehouse put on a great set, though many agreed that Walthour’s was their favorite. Providing both guitar and vocals, Walthour played “Tambourine Woman,” “The Water” and an untitled song.
“I love to share my music, and everyone [was] so supportive,” Walthour said. For this Valentine’s Day event, she dedicated her songs to Marcus Mumford: the man who she says is “forever in my heart.”
