Football:
Eastern Football opened its season on the road against #24 Endicott College on Saturday. They ended up losing 24-14.
Eastern’s two scores came from a 74-yard rushing touchdown from Quarterback, Brett Nabb, in the 2nd quarter, as well as a 91-yard kick return from Wide Receiver, Chris Rivera. Nabb ended the day throwing 11 completions through the air for 125 yards, as well as running for 70 yards and the previously mentioned touchdown on the ground. Senior Running Back, Jeremiah Avrilien, contributed 67 yards on the ground, as well as 35 receiving yards. Senior Receiver, Devon Johnson. led the Eagles in receiving yards with 45 on three catches. On the defensive side of the ball, Senior Defensive Back, Jamauri James led the Eagles in tackles with 10, followed by Senior Defensive Backs, Sam Scell and Noriano Smith, who each had 9 and 8 tackles respectively. Senior Linebacker, Saadiq Simpkins, came up with a goal-line interception, the only forced turnover of the game for the Eastern Defense. Senior Kicker, John Nolek, went 2/2 on his Extra Point attempts, and Junior Running Back/Wide Receiver, Curtis Johnson, showcased his punting ability by pinning Endicott inside the two-yard line in the Third Quarter, as well as two other punts within Endicott’s 25.
Eastern Football’s next contest is Saturday, Sept. 12, at home against Misericordia. Kickoff is at 1 pm.
WSOC:
Eastern Women’s Soccer opened its season at home with a shutout 1-0 win over Washington college on Sept. 3. First-year Midfielder Saige Korpics scored in the 30th minute off a corner kick assist from Heather Abzug. Eastern’s defenders maintained a clean sheet, including 5 saves from Senior Goalkeeper, Faith Leake.
Their next competition came on the road Saturday, vs Penn State Abington. Ending in a 5-0 shutout win, the Eagles were hot offensively, to the tune of 5 goals and 14 shots on goal. Sophomore Midfielder, Molly Schellpeper, led the scoring with 2 goals of her own, followed by First Year Forward, Corrine Myers, First Year Midfielder, Saige Korpics and Junior Defender, Emily Monforto, who all contributed a goal to the 5-0 score. Leake made a save in her 73-minute shift, before passing keeping duties to First-Year Abby Drucis, who held down the shutout for the remainder of the game.
Eastern Women’s Soccer’s next contest is Wednesday, Sept. 9 against Rutgers-Camden on the road. The game starts at 7 PM.
MSOC:
Men’s soccer opened its season with a high-paced draw at Delaware Valley on Sept. 2. Eastern Men took sixteen shots, eight of which were on goal, but to no avail. Senior Forward, Zach Sievert, led the Eagles in attempts, taking five shots, two of which were on goal. Senior Midfielder, Joao Tarabal, also contributed two shots on goal. On the defensive side, Junior Goalkeeper, Michael Arcuri, earned a clean sheet, making 5 saves and holding the Aggies to no score.
The following contest on their 2-match road stretch took place at Centenary University, on Saturday, Sept. 5. The match ended 4-1 in favor of Eastern. Senior Forward, Ethan Pfau, led the Eagles in scoring with two goals. Sievert and Sophomore Forward, Morris Marshall, each contributed a goal each. Eastern’s lone goal allowed came on a penalty kick in the 66th minute. However, Junior Goalkeeper, Michael Arcuri, made 2 saves in the game to limit the damage.
Eastern Men’s Soccer is back in action Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they take on Moravian at home. The game starts at 4 PM.
WXC/MXC:
Men and Women’s Cross Country kicked off their season this past Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Dutchmen Invitational, hosted by Lebanon Valley College. This is the first season being led by new Head Coach, Samantha David, who comes from the University of Valley Forge.
The Men’s team placed third at the invitational, led by three top-20 finishes, Junior Anthony Zamichieli, Senior Robert Walton, and Sophomore Joshua Knox-Wagner.
The Women’s team placed 5th, headlined by a 7th place finish from Sophomore Ashley Bitler. Juniors Tierra Hill and Kayleigh Newsome each finished with times under 22 minutes. Sophomores Talia Fogel and Helena Stoffel each recorded PB’s, as well as Junior Gisella Croge recording a PB of her own.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country continues their campaign on September 18th, at Stevenson University, in a MAC Championship preview meet.
FH:
Women’s Field Hockey went 2-0 this week as they notched wins over Moravian (3-2) and Gwynedd-Mercy (8-0). In the season opener at home against Moravian on Sept. 2, Grad Midfielder Brynne Miller, Sophomore Forward Rhyanna Ridgeway and First-Year Defender Lydia Ehst all notched goals for the Eagles. Despite allowing two goals in the close-knit contest, Eastern’s defense proved steady enough to hang on for the win, headlined by Junior Goalie Angelina Catania’s 4 saves in 60 minutes of play. In the following contest against Gwynedd-Mercy three days later, it turned out to be a different story. The Eagles put on an offensive clinic, thanks in part to Senior Forward Karlee Howard’s hat trick performance, as well as Sophomore Midfielder/Forward Cameron Brancato’s two goals. Junior Forward CJ Summa, Senior Defender Alyssa Caldini and Ehst all contributed one goal each as well. Eastern’s defense only allowed 3 shots, and none were able to get by Senior Goalie Christina Unger, who made the only needed save of the contest, or Catania.
Eastern Field Hockey is back in action on the road against Immaculata, Sept 9. The game starts at 4 pm.
WVB:
Eastern Women’s Volleyball started its season 2-1 this week, dropping the opener to Swarthmore on the road on Sept. 1, but also winning both matches played in a tri-match at Moravian on Sept. 5. In the opener, which the Eagles dropped 1-3, all four sets were close, being decided within 5 points or less, excluding the 4th set, decided by 7. First-Year Outside Hitter Piper Xeller led the Eagles offensively with 10 kills, followed by Senior Outside Hitter Alexis Standford with 9 and Senior Right-Side Jessie Schrieber with 8. First-Year Setter Alyssa Heffner notched 19 assists on the day, and Sophomore Setter Sarah Furey added 15 assists of her own. Senior Defensive Specialist/Libero Grace Cooper notched 21 digs in the effort. Four days later however, the Eagles would pick up two four-set wins over Moravian and Dickinson. In the first contest, Josie Arezina, Jessie Schrieber and Alexis Standford all notched over 10 kills, 12, 11 and 11 respectively. Alyssa Heffner contributed 26 assists, and Sarah Furey added 15 on top. In the second match, it would be more of the same offensive success for the Eagles. Jessie Schrieber would notch 17 kills, followed by Josie Arezina and Alexis Standford with 9 each. Sarah Furey would contribute 24 assists, and Alyssa Heffner would add 17. Grace Cooper and First-Year Outside Hitter Olivia McGowan would put up 26 digs a piece.
Eastern Women’s Volleyball travels to Chicago, Illinois next, for matches against John Carroll University on Sept. 11, Kalamazoo College and North Park University on Sept. 12.
