Senior Spotlight: Leah Weekes

As the fall semester comes to a close, seniors prepare to graduate and embark on the next phase of their lives. Leah Weekes, a Business Administration major with a concentration in Marketing, is one of those soon-to-be-graduates who has called Eastern home the last three and a half years.

During her time at Eastern, Leah has participated in numerous on-campus organizations, including being a part of our on-campus gospel choir, Angels of Harmony and working with Residence Life as a Residence Assistant and Assistant Resident Director. Singing with the choir has given her a chance to meet some of the friends she now has, as well as build connections with individuals at various churches. Leah has also been able to grow in her vocal range in the Angels of Harmony and try different song genres while ultimately falling back in love within her singing voice.

Leah has sought out many opportunities to grow in so many different areas, including personally, and spiritually. “I was able to learn a bit more about myself and about those around me. I now have so much more respect for the different cultures and perspectives in the world, even more than before,” Weekes said.

Weekes also said before being a student at Eastern, she grew up in West Indian culture, which shaped her worldview. As a student, she’s had the chance to encounter new cultures and traditions than one she grew up in. “I have found that being on Eastern’s campus has caused me to be more open-minded and accepting of others and their uniqueness,” Weekes said.

The two individuals on this Eastern campus that she has attributed to her spiritual growth to are Professor David Smith in the College of Business and Leadership, as well as Sharina Hudson, the Assistant Director of Residence Life. They both have encouraged her and pushed her further into her calling and even helped her to discover aspects of her vocation.

Weekes also attends her local church regularly. “I have found a church family through my connections at Eastern, and it has helped me grow in faith and deepen my walk and understanding of God in my life and the lives of others,” Weekes said.

Leah’s aspirations include going on to study for her M.B.A. in the next coming years. “I want to be able to achieve the highest level of education that I can mentally accomplish. With this, I am sure that mental health and financial battles will arise, but I am confident that if God brings me to it, He will bring me through it, “ Weekes said. The connections that Leah made at Eastern will be such a huge source of strength and guidance in her process.

Additionally, Leah stated that all the presentations and papers she had to write throughout her undergraduate experiences will prepare her for the kinds of work she will need to complete during her master’s experience. “I am forever grateful for Eastern University, as I have learned so much about myself, others and God. Through prayers and dedication, I am excited to see what the future holds for me,” Weekes said. Weekes is excited to see what God has in store for her as she begins this new chapter.
