Exploring Philadelphia


Philadelphia is one of the many cities near Eastern University, and it’s the sixth-largest city in North America. Philadelphia is a well-known city for its history, especially the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 in Independence Hall. Philadelphia is home to a number of cultural and historical landmarks, including museums, markets and coffee shops. The train is an easy option for commuters taking students from St. Davids station straight to the heart of the city. 

The Philadelphia City Hall building located at 15th & Market St is well worth the visit. It has a statue of William Penn on the very top, which you can view from up close by taking a tour of the building from the City Hall observation deck. The LOVE Statue is another famous Philadelphia attraction, with three different locations throughout the city. 

Philadelphia is also home to a number of interesting museums. The Philadelphia Art Museum offers discounted tickets at only $14 a piece, if you show a valid student ID. On the first Sunday of every month, you can pay-what-you-wish, making your ticket as low, or as high as your wallet will allow. The Philadelphia Museum of Art houses a number of famous pieces, including works by Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gough and Pablo Picasso. 

Another famous museum attraction is the Barnes Foundation which offers students with valid IDs tickets for the price of only $5. What started out as a personal art collection has become one of the city’s most renowned art galleries. This museum is well worth the visit for any students interested in art! 

For a deep dive into the city’s rich history, there’s the Museum of the American Revolution where they offer students and teachers a discounted rate of $21; a price that includes two visits. Take advantage of the chance to engage with the city that was such an integral part of our nation’s founding! Philadelphians who are eligible for SNAP benefits may have access to even more discounts when visiting local museums. 

Another tourist attraction is for food lovers. Reading Terminal Market which is open 7 days a week from 8am to 6pm. This indoor market has stands with food and drinks from all over the world. With over 80 different vendors to choose from, Reading Terminal Market is an excellent stop for food and culture. 

The Philadelphia Christmas Village, a seasonal landmark, will be opening downtown in Center City in Philadelphia until Christmas Eve. The Wanamaker organ Christmas light show is also reopening for the first time in years. 

There are so many opportunities to explore Philadelphia. Consider taking the train downtown to explore this amazing city in Eastern’s backyard.
