Eastern University has many departments that make up the student and faculty body, with each one having their own idiosyncrasies. Despite these unique qualities, we can all (hopefully) bond over a shared love of one thing: music. Ranging from healthcare and exercise science to the fine and performing arts, there is a genre for everyone. After reading this, you may feel the need to change your playlist and incorporate some songs based on my choice of genre for your department.
Starting off strong with healthcare and exercise sciences, this department emulates early 2000’s pop. Folks who are in this department are dedicated both to their schooling and the wellness of others. This genre brings out the fun and familiar side of life, all while providing a bit of nostalgia. People in this department are usually gregarious because of their drive to work with the public and see improvements in people’s lives. This music feeds their interesting personalities and gives energy to their late-night study sessions or early waking clinical hours.
Humanities is a huge range to cover, because it includes so many wonderful majors. Overall, I feel as if the most all-encompassing genre that fits this group is contemporary rhythm and blues. This genre is filled with so many classics that represent the easy-going attitude of many people in the humanities. People in this department are oriented towards essential concepts of justice, all while pondering the big questions of life. Contemporary rhythm and blues provide the perfect vibe and atmosphere for contemplation, or a fun hang out with friends.
Social sciences, psychology and counseling is a department full of inquisitive people. Naturally, their genre is indie folk. Their personalities hold a certain allure that tends towards the unknown. They strive to understand people and groups in new contexts and situations, which aligns with the creative lyricism of indie folk artists.
STEM and natural sciences love torturing themselves. Majoring within this department is a four-year sentence of all-nighters, labs and exams that make absolutely no sense. This department fits the standard for house/EDM, because they need something to keep them awake and stimulated between the 25 hours of class they have per day. Listening to music that provides high-energy beats keeps these folks from falling asleep while working on their endless amounts of assignments.
Theology, bible and ministry studies get the genre of contemporary Christian music. These people really love Jesus, and all that He has to offer. This genre aligns with the uplifting spirits of this department, and acts as an accessible form of entertainment for all people to enjoy. Listening to this genre builds community and offers opportunities for growth. It is perfect to put on and listen to before a Bible study, or when going for a peaceful drive!
The Business Leadership department is full of people who really know what they want, which is independence, stability and financial freedom. These folks know how to have a good time in the process of getting their degree, so it seems that rap is fitting for their personalities.
The communication, languages and literature departments all have tons of reading to do. Because of this, they may be intrigued by lofi-chill beats. They are the embodied version of the lofi hip-hop girl on YouTube.
Education majors are some of the hardest working people I know. People within the education department are driven by the desire to do well for their students. They have amazing personalities, and if they cater to early ed, they usually play music for their kids. Eastern’s own Carolena Gursky claims that children’s music should represent the education department, and I would have to agree with her. Inevitably, these silly and fun songs end up on repeat in our heads, but it is worth it in the end!
Last but not least is the fine and performing arts. The talent within these departments is fiery and outstanding. There is never a dull moment in the arts, because their abilities are endless. The genre that represents them best is classical music, because these departments incorporate it frequently into the pieces and performances they put on. People within the arts have an appreciation for the cultivation of music and performance, which are traits required to love classical music.
